CEO Update

The latest RGJ Article - Let's Not Fear Growth.  It is already starting! I have been asked by some in the community to stop, or at least slow down doing our job here at EDAWN; the job of bringing quality companies to the region. Yes, Reno - Sparks is growing, and it is growing at an unprecedented rate. More than 18 months ago , when EDAWN announced we would be adding over 50,000 new jobs to the region in five years, there was mostly skepticism and a let's wait and see attitude. Here is the article .

In case you missed it: Prior EDAWN articles, published in the RGJ, are stored on our website.  Here is the link to the library .

Entrepreneurial Development
The Reno Mini Maker Faire was held last Saturday, July 9th, at Idlewild Park!  Over 1000 attendees and makers participated in the event. Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth, a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It is part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new. At this year ' s event, participants learned about 3D printing, virtual reality, electronics, robotics, metal fabrication, hand spinning yarn and took part in various hands on activities.

The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council ranked Nevada #2 for the best ranking tax system in the nation. The SBE ranked the 50 states according to the costs of their tax systems for entrepreneurship and small business; pulling together 25 different tax measures, and combining those into one tax score that allows the 50 states to be compared and ranked. Among the taxes included are income, capital gains, property, death, unemployment, and various consumption-based taxes, including state gas and diesel levies. You can read the full article here.

Business Retention|Expansion & Workforce
"Save the Date" - Mark your calendars for the 5th annual EDAWN Existing Industry Awards, scheduled for Thursday, October 13th, 2016, at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. This is a great opportunity to highlight and recognize the accomplishments of the many great primary employers in the region. Nominate yourselves, a client, or a company you may know. For Award categories go here and General Criteria go here

The BRE&W Development team had a strong finish for the fiscal year and made over 180 visits to primary companies, representing over 15,000 existing employees. During these visits they made over 104 connections to education, in addition to 82 internship referrals. They worked on 14 critical business issues and helped over 115 companies. They also worked with 7 existing companies on expansions which contributed 186 jobs to the EDAWN total for assisted jobs. A big thank you to all those companies who opened their doors to the team and helped us to help them!

FY 2016 was also a big year on the workforce development front. EDAWN added a Workforce Development Program Manager to implement strategies to connect employees and employers, connect companies with resources, align training programs with employer needs, and attract employees from outside the area. In conjunction with The Chamber, the team took over shared leadership of the Workforce Consortium to drive continued collaboration and results.

The Primary Company List, updated monthly, now contains 467 entries with information about existing primary companies in the region including where there are located, their industry, and what they do. This list is useful as a marketing tool, as a supply chain resource list, and is also useful for employees seeking work in the region or anyone who wants to research who is doing business in the region in key industries.

Biggest Little Employee Retention Tip of the Month:   Manager Mistakes That Hurt RetentionCathy Norris of Sensational Leadership, highlights the unintentional mistakes managers make that lead to employees gradual dislike of their jobs. And she shares the emotional intelligence behavioral skills that leaders use to create a positive climate of loyalty, creativity, and that improves business performance.
