Invite Your Friends and Family to
    Learn Bridge in a Day

Hand Point at Cards Many people want to try bridge for the first time or have dabbled a little, but aren't sure how to get started or get back into the game. If you know someone like that, please tell them about the Learn Bridge in a Day seminar coming on September 21.

Learn Bridge in a Day is a one-day program that introduces all of the fundamentals. While bridge is certainly a game for a lifetime, this program arms new players with the basics in an entertaining and instructive single day. At the end of the day, participants will have a solid foundation in bidding and play, and can be ready to tackle more lessons or a novice duplicate game. All instructors are ACBL accredited and the class includes time for actual play.

The course will be held at Bala Golf Club and runs from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. It includes lunch, a student manual and other materials, and a gift bag. The cost is $75; there is a 10% discount for groups of 4 or more that register together.

Meet New Unit 141 I/N Coordinator Bruce Lang

bruce lang This month, we talk with the enthusiastic and energetic new Unit 141 Intermediate/ Newcomer coordinator, Bruce Lang. Bruce talks about his plans to organize efforts on behalf of the newer players in our area and his love for bridge.

U141: You are the new Unit 141 Intermediate/Newcomer Coordinator. What are the main responsibilities of that position?

BL: To encourage a wider group to learn and play bridge and to be a voice for the needs of the I/N players.

U141: What exactly are I/N players and why are they so important to growing the game?

BL: We can arbitrarily say that its players with under 499 master points, but the primary need is for those with 0-99 points, social or rubber bridge players just coming to duplicate, and those who have yet to know about bridge. They are important for the obvious reasons...they are our game's future. We don't have a growing game without them.

U141: How do you plan to continue to serve the current I/N players in the unit and also bring in new players?

BL: I am supportive of Learn Bridge in a Day seminars (LBIAD) as well as the efforts of clubs, teachers, and other players to create more opportunities for I/N to learn and play in a safe environment. I also encourage all life masters and other experienced players to reach out to new players in the clubs and offer to play with them from time to time. Tom Barbor did this for me and it made quite an impression. Most importantly, I am available to listen to all players and be a voice for them.

U141: How do you think the needs of I/N players are different from players who have more experience with the game?

BL: I think they have the need to feel safe, valued, and welcome. Being friendly and encouraging toward new players will go a very long way to having them return.

This photo, from an I/N event last year, shows Maryann Whitman and Hedy Shavel enjoying early bridge success.

U141: What are your immediate goals for the I/N program?

BL: To promote I/N team bridge, to establish relationships with club owners, and to listen. I will encourage all clubs to add a green game/0-500 game to their roster.

U141: What specific events do you have planned for the next six months?

BL: A Learn Bridge in a Day Seminar takes place on September 21 at Bala Golf Club. The upcoming sectional at Bala will have I/N tables. A date will soon be set for a one day I/N sectional for teams, most likely in October.

U141: What existing programs will continue? What new ones do you have planned?

BL: I/N Teams and I/N events at sectionals will continue. I hope to work with clubs to add offerings there. Just as Wilmington in Unit 190 holds I/N sectionals, we hope to add some here at clubs also.

U141: In what ways can the ACBL help at improving the overall I/N efforts?

BL: It's really the individual players being encouraging and the club owners being welcoming that counts most, but the ACBL provides some tools. We can direct I/N players to their site to see upcoming local competitions, find a teacher, and to use some of the online learning tools the ACBL provides. I would like to see one-day sectionals re-approved.

U141: What role do the clubs in the unit play in cooperating with the I/N program and how does the I/N program assist the local clubs?

BL: Clubs can and do set aside times for supervised play, learning, and green games. The key I think, however, is to WELCOME all players and ENCOURAGE them to keep playing. I/N can provide to clubs educational materials as well as information about some limited matching funding for lessons and teaching from the ACBL.

Lang thinks that encouragement from more experienced players can keep newer players coming back to bridge.

U141: Let's shift gears a bit. Tell us how you started playing bridge and about your bridge background.

BL: In November 2011, my Aunt Judy asked me to sit in as a fourth for a game. After a quick lesson on 8 card fits, transfers, and Stayman, we played. It was frustrating and fun. I then downloaded Bridge Baron on my iPad and played approximately 10 hands a day until Christmas. I then played a duplicate game at a club with my dad. After that, I called clubs to set up partners and went and played. (It was painful for these patient people.) I then attended group lessons and some individual lessons. The key is that I played regularly, 2-3 times per week. I also bought the BIBLE - Watson's Play of the Hand - so the learning could take hold. By summer 2012, it was Nationals in Philly. I played in 299er events and open events. I was so impressed with the communication in the open events that I took private lessons for carding, signals, etc. That transformed my game.

U141: How did your experiences as a new player influence what you plan to do as the I/N Coordinator?

BL: My playing experience was varied and I played with many people. My encouragement to all I/N players is to PLAY. If your partner is sick or traveling, play anyway with someone else.

U141: You are a very enthusiastic player. What do you like so much about the game?

BL: I know this answer is very brief, but I appreciate the games depth

    U141:
That's a great, concise answer! Thanks for talking with us, Bruce. We look forward to seeing your plans in action and many new I/N players at Unit 141 clubs and sectionals in the future.

    Solomon Teams: Update

Last month's article about Peggy Solomon included a photo that asked readers to identify seven well-dressed players. Many of you picked out Omar Sharif on the right, but we also received requests for clarification.

von Zedwitz, [unknown], Yallouze, Garozzo, Charles Solomon, Peggy Solomon, Sharif

From Judy Kay-Wolff, "On the far left, it looks like Baron Waldemar von Zedwitz; don't know the lady; but on her right is Egyptian Leon Yallouze whom I got to know at the Circus as he was the overseer and arranged the entire shebang. Seems like a century ago."

After that, it's Benito Garozzo, the Solomons, and Omar Sharif. If anyone can identify the unknown woman flanked by von Zedwitz and Yallouze, please let us know!

Quiz Show 1: Hands, Calls, and Contracts

Card Hand D4 Try your hand at these challenging and interesting quiz questions from Richard Pavlicek  (http://www.rpbridge.net/). Make note of your score and we'll run another set next month to tease your brain.

A What is the total number of different bridge hands that could be dealt? (A) 635 million (B) 635 billion (C) 635 quintillion

B In a legal bridge auction (no insufficient bids or other irregularities), what is the maximum number of bids? What is the maximum number of calls?

C You might know that 3NT is the most common contract reached. What would you guess are the next five most common contracts? What is the least common contract of all?

D What is the probability that a random bridge deal will contain a singleton or void in at least one hand? (A) 37 percent (B) 58 percent (C) 79 percent

    Header02

    [Answers]

A (B) To be exact, there are 635,013,559,600 unique bridge hands. It is easy to calculate as the number of combinations of 52 items taken 13 at a time.

    B There are only 35 possible bids, so no legal auction could have more than 35 bids. The maximum number of calls is 319! The ridiculous auction begins: P P P 1 P P Dbl P P Rdbl P P 1 ... and ends: 7 NT P P Dbl P P Rdbl P P P.

C The most common contracts are, in order: 3NT, 4 Spades, 4 Hearts, 2 Spades, 2 Hearts, 1NT. The least common contract most people would guess is one of the grand slams, but that is wrong. When was the last time you played 5NT?

D (C) Surprised? Almost four deals out of five have a singleton or void somewhere.

Table Tips: Be a Good Partner

    rich rothward
Being a good partner helps lead to your success.
A big part of success at the bridge table results from being a good partner. In the heat of competition, though, it's easy to forget how to be a supportive partner and do things that can derail your partner's confidence and concentration. To continue to be a good partner at all times, keep in mind this important rule: Don't talk bridge while you're playing bridge. Here are some specific tips that should also help.

    1. Don't give lessons.

    2. Don't result the hand. That is, don't criticize your partner for a good decision that just didn't work out.

    3. Clear up misunderstandings and ask questions after, not during, a round.

    4. Squelch the urge to yell, criticize, embarrass, or be sarcastic.

    5. When you do discuss a hand or decision with your partner, do it professionally. Critique the action, not the person. Speak the way you would want to be spoken to. When appropriate, get advice from better players to help figure out what really was the right thing to do.
