Philly Area Players Make Winter Gusts at Nationals

snowman The winter Nationals in Phoenix that ended with a national weather storm capped a week of gusts at the bridge table by Unit 141 players too.

Readers can go online to find all of the results, but Unit 141 had some fine showings despite a relatively small Philly-area turnout for the distant southwest location.

There are three ACBL National Tournaments every year. It is a great time time to get in some good bridge and do some sight seeing in the tournament area. The National tournaments feature many guest lecturers and special classes like Learn Bridge in a Day?, Director courses, and TAP (Teacher Accreditation Program). Besides the premier NABC+ events, regional KOs start every day with tons of Gold Points. There are also single session events every day.

The next Nationals is in Dallas on March 20-30, 2014. After that the host cities are Las Vegas, Providence, RI, and New Orleans. Find your partners and teammates and start making plans now!

Unit 141's Unique Dupli-Swiss Makes National Bridge News

Did anything look familiar in December's Bridge Bulletin? The premiere bridge magazine featured an article about Unit 141's pioneering Sunday Dupli-Swiss. For those of you who have already played at a Sunday sectional, you know how great a Dupli-Swiss game. Having the same boards across each "quad" minimizes the randomness of a Swiss Teams events and allows for hand records. If you haven't experienced it yet, you can read more about it and then try it yourself at the next sectional in January.

You can find the article in your print copy on pages 38-39 or log on to the ACBL website (www.acbl.org) and click on the "Bridge Bulletin Online" link for this month's issue.

District 4 Launches Online Partnership Desk

Big news for anyone looking for partners or teammates for Unit 141 or District 4 events. District 4 now hosts a free, easy-to-use online partnership service. You can find a link at either the Unit 141 website or the District 4 website: http://www.bridgefinesse.com/D4PDeskIndex.

At the home page, you start by selecting the event for which you need a partner or teammates.

Then you enter your information and register. Or, if you had already registered before, you just enter your ACBL player number to re-enter the site.

You enter your "needs" and then you will see who might be available to play. There is also an online tutorial to explain anything about the site that might be unclear.

This service should making finding partners a simpler task for all. Please let us know what you think!

    January Sectional at Bala

There is only a month to go before we kick off the 2014 Unit 141 Sectional schedule. All sectional tournaments for the year will be held at Bala, with the first taking place on January 10-12.

The golf club will be closed for the season in January and February, so bridge players will have full access to the parking lots. Valet parking, as always, will also be available. The usual hospitality, including breakfast, lunch, drinks, and snacks, will be offered.

For additional information, please see the flyer

at the Unit 141 website or contact Tournament Chair Meyer Kotkin ([email protected]) or Unit 141 President Mike Giesler ([email protected]).

Table Tips: Be a Good Dummy

hand with dummy We all know that a good dummy is seen and not heard (and puts down the cards it is expected to have), but here are a few tips to help behave just as a dummy should:

    1. Pull a card only when declarer calls for it. Pulling cards ahead of time or asking partner if he or she would like a particular card suggests a line of play to partner. It is unethical. Pulling cards out of turn (even if it is "obvious" which card is intended) can also be disorienting or annoying to the opponents.

    2. It is okay for dummy to keep declarer from breaking the rules (by not leading from the wrong hand or to prevent a revoke), but he or she shouldn't provide the same service for the opponents.

    3. It's a small thing, but if you end up in a notrump contract when you might have ended up in a suit contract (perhaps partner transferred, but you did not find a fit), don't put the cards in that suit on declarer's left. You don't want your partner to have the slightest confusion that the suit might be trump.
