Preparing in Case of Postal Disruption

Canada Post service will continue for the immediate future, but SUMA is prepared in case that changes. We emailed members last week about how we can all prepare (information that is also available on our website news feed), and want to remind you of some of the highlights.
  • You may be able to email some items and follow up with an original in the mail or by courier.
  • However, group benefits may require originals. Be sure to check what can be emailed to [email protected].
  • In the event of a disruption, some items (such as cheques and drug cards) will have to wait until mail service resumes.
  • Now is a good time to sign up for Member eClaims with Great-West Life. Don't forget to sign up for direct deposit as well, so you don't have to wait for payment.
  • Our election supplies program through SUMAdvantage will continue to run. Alternative shipping options include STC, Purolator, FedEx, and pick up from the SUMA office.

Convention 2017:
Call for Resolutions

SUMA is a membership-driven organization. One way you can get your issues to the forefront is by submitting a resolution for our annual convention. To get started with resolutions, review the  Resolutions Policy, search our Resolutions Database for past resolutions, and see  the full Call for Resolutions document with its template.

Email your resolutions for Convention 2017 to [email protected] by  Friday, October 21.

Week of Saskatchewan Ukrainians

In January, Premier Brad Wall proclaimed 2016 the Year of Saskatchewan Ukrainians ,  launching events and celebrations across the province to mark the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada.

Municipalities can help make this a truly provincial celebration by proclaiming September 26-October 2, 2016, the "Week of Saskatchewan Ukrainians."

The Ukrainian Congress Saskatchewan is hosting the  XXV Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians , which will be held in September 29 - October 2 in Regina, marking the first time in the Congress' 75 year history that it will be held in Saskatchewan.

Share Your Municipal Law Decisions

Has your community been in court or before a tribunal lately? Your experiences with the judicial system can help fellow members build on successes or avoid risk. By sharing any court or tribunal decisions with us - regardless of outcome - you can help us spot new legal precedents and keep pace with municipal law trends. If you have a recent decision to share, please contact Steven Dribnenki at 306-525-4389 or [email protected].

Golf Tournament Cancelled

Due to the low number of registrations, Weyburn City Council has made the difficult decision to cancel the golf tournament scheduled for July 14-15, 2016. All registrants have been contacted directly by the City of Weyburn to inform them of the cancellation. The community was truly looking forward to showcasing their city's hospitality to the rest of the province but did not feel the low registration would provide attendees the best experience possible.

The City of Weyburn is truly sorry for having to cancel the 2016 SUMA Golf Tournament and hope to see additional support at the tournament hosted by the Town of Rosthern in 2017.

WCB Distributing Excess Surplus to Employers

Saskatchewan Workers' Compensation Board will be returning $281.5 million in surplus to employers in 2016. Higher than expected investment earnings resulted in the surplus, half of which will be returned to employers this month. The remainder will be issued by the end of the year.  Employers are eligible for the 2016 surplus distribution if their accounts are in good standing, and if their net premiums were greater than their claims costs from 2012 to 2014. For more information about the refund, see the WCB frequently asked questions page.

Help Stop Illegal Waste Disposal

The Ministry of Environment needs your help reminding residents that unlawful waste disposal harms us all. The provincial fine for  open burning of mixed waste is $500 for individuals and $1,000 for businesses, while the fine for  illegal dumping is $1,000. Municipalities are encouraged to enact and enforce their own bylaws to address unlawful waste disposal. If you suspect open burning of mixed waste or illegal dumping, report the incident to the TIP line: 1-800-667-7561.
