By Rudaw ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Iraqi army announced on Saturday the recapture of the old Gayara air base near the Tigress River in an offensive that aims to inch closer to the Islamic State's (ISIS) stronghold of Mosul, said the governor of Nineveh.
"Today, at 10 am Iraqi forces launched an attack on Gayara military airport and managed to control it," Nofel Hamadi, Nineveh Governor told Rudaw.
"ISIS did not fight back and they escaped to Mosul," Hamadi added.
Gayara is a former Iraqi army air base that has been used by ISIS militants as a bomb-making center, according to military officials.
The army says that Gayara brings them closer to Mosul that has been under ISIS control for two years.
Previously known as the Saddam Airbase, Gayara played a crucial role during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s.

millionday The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) executive board has approved a $5.34 billion program for Iraq to help strengthen the country's finances. The IMF said in a statement on July 7 that the three-year loan will see $634 million immediately allocated to Baghdad.

BAGHDAD / News Network Iraq and the IMF agreed on Saturday to give Iraq a line of credit worth $ 5.34 billion to help it overcome the financial crisis faced after the deterioration of oil prices and the war against Alarhab. ooodh Fund said in a statement, that the Iraqi government will take place in case a loan an initial value of $ 634 million, while it must implement a series of economic reforms to get the rest of the installments of this assistance plan for three years.
The statement quoted Zhou Min, one of the assistant directors of the Fund, as saying: "Iraq's economy has suffered severely from the double trauma of the organization of the Islamic state and severe attacks decline in oil prices." Fund expressed in his statement expressed concern about the arrears, especially the "big" accumulated on Baghdad, which is struggling to meet its financial obligations.
