2nd Annual Bucksport Arts Festival, 8/13

The 2nd Annual Bucksport Arts Festival will be returning to the waterfront walkway this summer on Saturday, August 13th with a few familiar faces. Over 75% of artists who participated in 2015 have already registered for the 2016 festival, and registration continues to grow each month as new artists apply before the July 15th deadline.

It's no surprise that many artists are choosing to come back to Bucksport. The location is ideal to draw summer tourists wandering along the coastline, and the views are unmatched by any local festival. Artists that participated last year reported "it was my best single show day ever" and "it was a record breaking day". Advertised throughout the state, the festival brings in visitors and shoppers from across Maine and New England.

In addition to returning 2015 artists, several new artists will be joining the festival this coming August.

The 2nd Annual Bucksport Arts Festival will be held Saturday, August 13th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on the waterfront walkway. In addition to artists and craftspeople, there will also be local food vendors and music for all to enjoy. The event is being organized in partnership with the Bucksport Area Cultural Arts Society (BACAS), an organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the cultural and performing arts for Bucksport and surrounding communities. Visit www.bacasmaine.org for more information on their upcoming events, or to apply for the Bucksport Arts Festival.

The 2016 Bucksport Arts Festival is made possible by Seaboard Federal Credit Union with additional support by WLBZ 2. Seaboard FCU is a member-owned cooperative, whose mission is to provide quality financial services to all members at fair and reasonable rates and terms.

Camden National Bank Employees Raise $9,000 to Help Fight Maine's Growing Hunger Problem

During the months of June and July, employees from Camden National Bank are delivering donations, totaling close to $9,000, to 29 food pantries throughout the state of Maine. Funds for the donations were raised by employees, through the Bank's employee-run community outreach program, the Community Spirit of Giving (CSOG), and will help provide meals and support to the more than 208,000 individuals in Maine who currently turn to food pantries and meal service programs for food assistance every year.

The goal of Camden National's Community Spirit of Giving program is to make an impact in local communities by providing assistance to underprivileged children and families through work with local food pantries, as well as schools and community leaders, to help prevent hunger.  According to recent numbers provided by the Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine, the program's current donation will provide 34,800 meals to those facing food insecurity in the state. In addition, as food needs rise for children during the summer months, the funds can be used to support the 85,000 kids in Maine who receive free or reduced lunch and help ensure that they have enough to eat throughout summer vacation.

Complementing Camden National Bank's philanthropic efforts, the CSOG program was founded in 1991 by employees who wanted to create their own grassroots effort to support local communities and people in need.  Over the course of a year, employees create numerous fundraising events, ranging from raffles and bake sales to yard sales and other community events. Proceeds from these activities benefit the program and are used to support the needs of food banks and local food pantries throughout the state.

According to Feeding America, a nationwide network of member food banks working to feed America's hungry, one in seven Americans struggles to get enough to eat, and hunger or food insecurity exists in virtually every community in the United States. New data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in September 2015 also shows a growing hunger problem in Maine. According to the annual survey, Maine's food insecurity rate rose from 15.1 percent in 2013 to 16.2 percent in 2014, and Maine now ranks 12th in the nation and first in New England for food insecurity. In addition, the USDA estimates that 208,000 individuals in the state are food insecure, with 24 percent, or 64,200, being children. For more information on the survey and recent research, or to locate a food pantry in your area, visit the Good Shepherd Food Bank at  http://www.gsfb.org .

BACAS Begins Its "Sound Waves on the Waterfront" Fundraising Challenge

Recently, the need for a quality and portable sound system to be used for Chamber and BACAS events along the Bucksport waterfront became apparent. The Bucksport Area Cultural Society has taken the proverbial bull by the horns and decided to hold a fundraising challenge to raise the funds BEFORE the start of this year's Bucksport Bay Festival on  Friday, July 22nd . Initial research indicates the following equipment will be needed, as well as its approximate cost.

Sound System Proposal
Soundcraft Mixer           1@ $400 = $400
JBL EON 612 Speaker    2@ $400 = $800
Speaker Stands               2@ $20 =  $40
Shure PG58                     4@ $40 = $160
Mic Cable                         1@ $30 = $30
Speaker Cable                 1@ $25 = $25
                           Estimated total: $1,455

The Chamber will store the equipment, so that it is convenient for folks who will need to use it for waterfront events. At this time, discussions are underway as to the possibilities of the equipment being available for rent.

Those wishing to help with this challenge and get the ball rolling may leave their contribution at the Chamber office Tuesday through Friday from 9 to 3, or mail to:  BACAS  PO Box 1111  Bucksport, Maine   04416
Please make checks payable to BACAS, and place "Sound System" in the memo line.

Thank you for your consideration and support. Stay tuned for more information on this challenge, as well as progress updates.
