Summer Update
Announcements

Airlangga University in Surabaya, Indonesia has announced a new program for practitioners, researchers and graduate students that supports an affiliation with the university and some funding support. See the university website for the full announcement.
 
The Southeast Asian Studies Regional Exchange Program (SEASREP) Foundation has launched the inaugural issue of its  Regional Journal of Southeast Asian Studies (RJSEAS), an online, open access, peer-reviewed journal in English that aims to feature the work of scholars in the humanities and social sciences in the region. The journal is published twice a year (January and July).  The theme for the July 2016 issue of  RJSEAS is Plural Identities in Southeast Asia. The journal encourages new submissions, sent to the editors, c/o Prof. Maria Diokno, editor [at] rjseas.org.
Fellowships

Transregional Research Junior Scholar Fellowship

The SSRC is continuing its transregional grants program for researchers in any world region and also announces a new category of fellowship  - the SSRC Global Summer Semester Residency at the University of Göttingen (residency dates: April 15-July 15, 2017). The broad intellectual thrust of the fellowships will continue to be InterAsian Contexts and Connections. In addition, applications that explore the networks that connect Asia with Africa are encouraged for the 2016 awards cycle. Invitational priorities for the 2016-2017 Junior Scholar Fellowship include:  Afro-Asian Connections, Environmental Humanities, Religious Networks, Migration & Refugees, Resources & Archives. Invitational priorities for the 2017 Global Summer Semester Residencies include: Movements of Knowledge; Media, Migration, and the Moving Political; Religious Networks. Fellowships

Applicants are invited to apply for ONE of the four types of positions of job opportunities (Senior Research Fellow, Research Fellow, Postdoctoral Fellow, or Visiting Senior Research Fellow Sabbatical). Apart from the quality of research, positions will be awarded on the basis of the relationship of the research topic to ARI's specific cluster of research as listed in Research Clusters and Their Focus. Postdoctoral Fellowships at the Society of Fellows

Society Fellowships normally run for up to 34 months, beginning on September 1 and ending on June 30th of the final year. Applicants for the 2017 - 2020 Society Fellowships must have completed a Ph.D. no earlier than January 1, 2015. Applicants are expected to consult with a relevant faculty colleague at Dartmouth before submitting an application. See the Society of Fellows website to apply. Deadline: September 19, 2016.
 
ASEAN Regional Research Award
Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program
 
The ASEAN Research Program is a multicountry award to Southeast Asia. Research may be conducted in one, two or three of the following countries: Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Proposed projects should be three to six months in length, undertaken during a single residence abroad. Scholars in all appropriate disciplines are welcome to apply. Deadline: August 1, 2016. AAS seeks an individual to work with the AAS executive officers, board of directors and secretariat to develop specific plans for concepts outlined in the AAS strategic plan; seek foundation and other funding support for these initiatives; and develop connections with relevant institutions and individuals to advance these initiatives. Candidates are expected to have a graduate degree in Asian Studies.  This is a .75 to 1.00 FTE position. Application deadline: September 1, 2016. New Book

Aid Under Fire: Nation Building and the Vietnam War 
(University of Kentucky Press, 2016) by Jessica Elkind
 
This new book examines U.S. nation-building efforts in the South Vietnamese state during the decade preceding the full-scale ground war. The analysis highlights the important role played by nonstate actors in advancing U.S. policies and reveals the limits of American power and influence during the period. Jessica Elkind (Ph.D., UCLA) is Associate Professor of History at San Francisco State University.

This workshop aims specifically at scholars currently doing source-based historical research on the slave trade in Asia. The workshop will address the following themes: Size of slave trade; Patterns of slave trade; and, Sources on slave trade. Early career scholars (including Ph.D. researchers) who are currently engaged in source-based historical research on the slave trade in Asia are encouraged to react. Deadline: August 10, 2016. Appropriating Space in Colonial and Imperial Contexts

This workshop seeks to stimulate further research on concrete connections between human interactions and spatial transformation in colonial and imperial settings. The multidisciplinary project focuses on modern (post)colonial and imperial spaces (19th-21st century), including both urban and rural environments, and is aimed at decrypting complex dynamics of spatial appropriation and their impact upon social relations.
