Route 518 Bridge Work Halted by Transportation Funding Suspension
Local Officials Petitioning NJDOT; working with State Legislators
We are aware that many Montgomery residents and businesses have been inconvenienced and are concerned about the shutdown of the Route 518 bridge project over the Delaware and Raritan canal near Rocky Hill Borough. Work has been suspended due to the transportation funding stalemate in Trenton.  This state bridge improvement project had been on schedule for the 30-day closure that had been anticipated to end on August 5.  Now work has been halted and will likely take longer to reopen.  To our knowledge, repairs to the bridge have progressed enough that the bridge is no longer usable (until work is completed).

We are hopeful that the governor and legislature will reach a compromise and end the stalemate so work can resume on this project and many others across the state.

Please be aware that Somerset County Freeholder Mark Caliguire, a resident of Montgomery, and our other county officials have been in contact with the NJ Department of Transportation asking that this project be added to a limited list of state projects that cannot be suspended due to severe public health and safety concerns.  He is also working closely with our state legislators to weigh in on our behalf.

In the interim, we recommend that residents sign-up for Montgomery Twp. Police's free Nixle service which reports by text or email on up-to-the minute traffic situations of concern.  Go to: http://local.nixle.com/montgomery-police/ or text your zip code to 888777 (Tip: creating a Nixle account via browser allows you to best select which law enforcement entities you wish to receive texts/emails from.)

Here is a list of several alternate routes* which cross the D&R Canal:

To North:

-River Road (Rt. 533) to Griggstown Causeway (traffic back-up are occurring. Expect delays and avoid if possible during rush hours.)

-River Road (Rt. 533) to Blackwell Mills Road

-Amwell Road (Rt. 514)

To South:

-Kingston-River Rd. (Rt. 605) to Rt. 27 (traffic back-ups are occurring. Expect delays and avoid if possible during rush hours.)

-Ewing St. to North Harrison St. to Rt. 27.

-Washington Rd. or Alexander St. in Princeton to Rt. 1.

We will continue to update the community on developments on this issue as they occur. Thank you.
