The hot days of summer are upon us and with that many more people are exploring the open road. Did you know that there are about 30 million licensed drivers age 65 or older? I
n the next 20 years, the population of people age 65 and older is expected to reach 70 million people!
An interesting fact about the older adult demographic is that people under the age of 75 have relatively low crash involvement, but, after age 75, this changes. Reasons for this include various health conditions and/or medications that negatively affect driving abilities.
Additionally, some older adult drivers may not even be aware of these changes, or they may not be willing to admit them - to themselves or to others - including family members. In the case of people with cognitive impairments like dementia. Individuals with these impairments may not necessarily have the insight to recognize poor performance.

Public Review & Comment Now Open!
|
 A public review and comment period is now open for the proposed 2017 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) document. Comments will be accepted until Monday, October 3rd at 5:00 PM.
The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is a short-range program that identifies transportation projects to be implemented during the next 4 years and is updated annually. Click here for more information.

Regional Highlight:
Park City, Kansas
With a population in excess of 7,600 residents, Park City is the fourth largest city in Sedgwick County.
Home to premier entertainment and recreation, the city includes 81 Speedway, Hartman Arena and over 75 acres of parks with fishing, walking trails, a BMX track, skateboarding facilities, ball diamonds, and an 18 hole disc golf course.
Park City offers a comfortable lifestyle with strong city services. In May of 2017 a new 2,200 square foot City Municipal Building is projected to open as the new home for both city and police services to better meet the community needs.
Located on the north edge of the City of Wichita along the major northern Kansas route I-135, Park City is within a mile of other major highways including K-96, K-254 and I-235, with major links to the Kansas Turnpike.

A WAMPO Regional Connection
The 53rd Street North Corridor assumes a unique role in both the Park City transportation system, as well as in the larger regional system. Designed to increase connectivity within the area by
- Widening the roadway
- Making intersection and road improvements (lanes, traffic signals, driveways)
- Adding pedestrian and bicycle paths
With the assistance of WAMPO funding this project will also improve traffic flow and increase safety.

The regional impacts of the 53rd Street project carry to the east and west, as the arterial that connects Colwich, Andover, Maize, Park City, Wichita, Kechi, and BelAire.
Phase I of the project, slated to be completed in 2017, with Phase II, scheduled to be bid in October of 2016.

2016 Bicycle & Pedestrian Count
|
Every year WAMPO coordinates an annual count of bicycle and pedestrian activity across 35 different sites in Park City, Goddard, Andover, Mulvane and Wichita to name a few. The data collected during these counts helps to estimate the number of people and locations people bicycle, walk and run. Once collected, the data is used to plan the location of future bicycle and pedestrian investments.
This effort would not be possible without the commitment of our VOLUNTEERS each year!
Volunteers are needed to manually count bicyclists and pedestrians at several locations in the WAMPO region on the following dates:
Thursday, September 22 (5:00 - 7:00pm)
Saturday, September 24 (Noon - 2:00pm)

Infrastructure & Transportation Panel
This week, WAMPO Director, Phil Nelson joined infrastructure and transportation panelists in a discussion about the future of transportation hosted by EngageICT.
Topics discussed included transportation technology, demographic changes impacting transportation, issues associated with access and services for older adults, public transit, and public health considerations.

Long Range Transportation Plan Anniversary
It's been one year since the July 2015 approval of the MOVE 2040 long range transportation plan.
Since then the WAMPO board, committees and staff have been working diligently to implement the strategies outlined in MOVE 2040. Here are a few highlights of progress made to date:
- Completion of a regional asset management survey and identification of management tools and processes designed to assist member jurisdictions
- Developed a series of informative regional infographics
- Formation of 3 working groups focused on implementation activities
Please stay tuned for an upcoming public review and comment opportunity for the proposed amendments to the MOVE 2040 plan.
