Tampa Bay Times: St. Pete city and housing officials promise changes at Jordan Park

Mayor Rick Kriseman said he would use his "bully pulpit" as mayor to advocate for improved conditions at the Jordan Park public housing community.

Kriseman told members of the Citizen Advisory Committee of the South St. Petersburg Community Redevelopment Area Monday that, although the city doesn't own the property, he would push for "cultural changes" through appointments to the St. Petersburg Housing Authority's board and by encouraging better management of the 237-unit Midtown complex.

Kriseman said he would "call out issues when it's appropriate to do so."

Tampa Bay Business Journal: Kriseman talks up regional fare box proposal with DOT official

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman took to the phone on Wednesday to advocate for a regional fare box that could make it easier to connect Tampa Bay area transit agencies and its customers across county borders.

Kriseman lobbied U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx for a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant that would, in part, fund approximately $12.1 million project. Also on the call were Hillsborough Area Regional Transit CEO Katherine Eagan and the agency's government affairs director as well as Tampa City Council member and HART board chair Mike Suarez.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Pete committee reserves bulk of remaining BP money for climate study

The city has about $1.4 million left from its $6.5 million settlement with BP over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.

On Thursday, a City Council committee voted to earmark $1 million of that dwindling pile of cash to prepare the city for rising sea levels and other impacts of climate change.

Council member Darden Rice, who has led the effort with Mayor Rick Kriseman to study how the city can best adapt to climate change, said the city needed to get started.

Tampa Bay Times: Editorial: Tampa, St. Petersburg build ties with residents

Racial tensions in America were already sharpening even before the latest shootings of black residents by police in Minnesota and Louisiana and the slaughter of five police officers in Dallas. But in Tampa and St. Petersburg, elected officials, black leaders and police are pursuing conversations on the gulf that divides law enforcement and minority communities. This is not an easy dialogue, and all sides should recognize their biases and set their sights on how to create better understanding and safer communities.

WTSP: St. Pete ordinance takes aim at puppy mills

St. Petersburg city council will introduce a new ordinance on Thursday that will ban pet stores from selling cats and dogs unless those animals come from rescue or humane organizations.

Council member Karl Nurse said the purpose of the ordinance is to cut down on the number of animals euthanized each year, and to thwart the power of puppy mills, which often supply pet stores with animals. He said cities and counties that do not have restrictions on puppy mills create a surplus of dogs, leading to thousands of animals that are killed every year.

Business Observer: Good Batch

Matt Kozuba learned an important business lesson in nearly a decade of helping his family run a successful small-batch spirit distillery in Poland.

The lesson: Put significant time and resources early on into finding the right sales strategy and team to execute that strategy.

Kozuba, 40, along with his younger brother Jacob Kozuba, 34, and their father, Zbigniew "Papa" Kozuba, moved their distillery operations from Poland to St. Petersburg last year. The company, Kozuba & Sons, locally produces and sells a line of sprits that includes aged rye vodka, fruit cordials and 100% malted rye whisky. The lesson from back home, about the right team, say the Kozubas, was a significant factor in the move.
