BGE Celebrates Bicentennial by Leaving a Legacy

T wo hundred years!
The anniversary of BGE's founding two centuries ago is certainly a cause for celebration, and this year has been full of special events and activities for our employees, customers and partners.

We gathered with our families for BGE Employee Day at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, joined customers for BGE days at the Orioles and sponsored Independence Day celebrations in communities across our service area, including the popular fireworks at Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

We are also using this great milestone to confirm that one of the things we are proudest of at BGE -- our  investment in the Central Maryland community -- will continue for generations to come.  As part of our anniversary celebration, BGE is presenting three legacy gifts to our service area.

First, our employees have been working with the nonprofit Art with a Heart and student volunteers to create 100 unique mosaics that incorporate "BGE 200" in their designs.  These mosaics will be installed at schools and community organizations throughout the area for beautification and inspiration.

Second, we have collaborated with the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation to develop a ballpark in West Baltimore to be named the Eddie Murray Field at BGE Park in honor of the Baseball Hall of Famer and Baltimore Orioles legend.  The park will be home to James Mosher Baseball, the oldest continuously operating African-American youth baseball league in the country. Eddie Murray Field at BGE Park received additional financial support from Bon Secours Hospital, along with Ollie's Bargain Outlet, The Cupid Foundation, Under Armour, The State of Maryland and Fields, Inc.

Third, BGE will announce the details of our third legacy gift, a college scholarship program, later this year.

As we continue to support more than 300 regional nonprofits that enhance of the lives of our customers, this year BGE will donate a total of $5 million dollars in charitable gifts.  These gifts, and all of BGE's anniversary activities, are funded through shareholder dollars.

Making History
Telling the story of a 200-year-old company is no easy feat. When BGE commissioned a coffee table book to chart the company's history, feature present-day operations and preview the future that current leaders envision, Lynn Hrdlick knew it would be no easy task.

Hrdlick, BGE's principal corporate social responsibility specialist, served as project manager for the company's 200th anniversary celebration, including the creation of the commemorative book.

Lynn Hrdlick reviews the finished product.
"After 31 years, I thought I knew a lot about this company, but I soon found out I had only scratched the surface," she explained with a laugh.

Burt Kummerow and Mary Blair of History Works wer e up to the challenge of painstaking research, writing, e diting and proofreading.  It helped that Kummerow, former president and CEO of The Maryland Historical Society, is deeply immersed in Baltimore's history. "Remembering the past is important as a company moves toward its future," stated Kummerow.

The extraordinary effort culminated in Moving Smart Energy Forward: 1816-2016, a
147-page hardcover book filled with photos, stories and historical facts.

Blair, who provided writing and documentation support, called the BGE photos, documents and artifacts preserved by The Maryland Historical Society and The Baltimore Museum of Industry "essential" for the book's compilation.

"We're so fortunate to have the historical perspective of how BGE's values evolved over the centuries," said Blair. "Values and its people helped earn BGE a place as one of a very few venerable American companies surviving and thriving today."

On BGE's official 200th anniversary, June 17, 2016, each BGE employee received a copy of the book.  The company also provided copies to retirees and many community organizations.
"The book is a tribute to the thousands of employees who have worked for BGE for two centuries," said Hrdlick. "Many people came together to make this book something special," noted Hrdlick. "It's a wonderful keepsake."

30 Projects in 30 Days
BGE employees marked National Volunteer Week (April 10-16) during the designated week and throughout the entire month of April by participating in 30 service projects, with the goal of meeting customers' needs on a number of levels.

Volunteer teams planted community gardens, prepared food for homebound individuals and helped rebuild homes, supporting organizations and programs that enhance the overall quality of life in the communities where BGE customers and employees live and work.
