Montgomery Rated Among Safest U.S. Cities
Montgomery Township has been ranked among the safest places in America in the latest annual ratings from Safewise.com. Montgomery is ranked #67 in the Safewise "Top 100 Safest Cities in America 2016" list, which rates 20,000 townships across the U.S each year.

Montgomery's safety statistics are also in the top 5% of all NJ towns and one of the best in Somerset County.

"Montgomery is not only one of the best towns for families in New Jersey, it is one of the safest cities in America." said Mayor Patricia Graham.  "Our outstanding police force deserves recognition for their hard work and dedication to serving and protecting our community. As elected officials, it is gratifying to see that our commitment to public safety continues to yield excellent results!"

The 2014 Uniform Crime Statistics for Municipalities in New Jersey - the latest official numbers available - cite Montgomery's violent crime rate of 0.09 per 1000 and a property crime rate of 5.14 per 1000.

"A big thanks for this recognition goes out to our outstanding police department and dedicated residents who are determined to keep Montgomery a special place.  Our Township Committee believes proactively planning for our police force's future needs is a key to success. This means hiring the right cadets, making the right leadership promotions, and ensuring that the department is appropriately equipped," said Deputy Mayor Ed Trzaska.

Safewise.com describes Montgomery Township as follows:

"A thriving community with outstanding schools, abundant natural resources, and fascinating history, Montgomery Township is also one of New Jersey's safest places to call home. In order to preserve the peace in this popular community, police publicly track crime and offer extra services, such as vacation house checks. This hands-on approach to policing helps keep crime at bay."

Safewise.com's rankings are generated by identifying communities with a population of more than 10,000 people which report complete crime data to the FBI. Safewise compares the number of reported violent crimes (murder, robbery, rape, and aggravated assault) and property crimes (burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson) in each city. To assess small and large cities fairly, they calculated the chance of both types of crime happening out of 1,000 people.
