Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth workers seal the HEUFS material into a sealed waste container.

Disposes of Decades-Old Waste Stream
PIKETON, Ohio - Disposition of a 40-plus-year-old legacy waste at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant site was completed thanks to a cooperative effort among the Department of Energy (DOE), contractors, and private industry.
Since 1973, DOE worked to characterize and dispose of these High Enriched Uranium Fluoride Solids (HEUFS). The task was to find an acceptable disposition path for the complex waste stream that resulted from oils entering the uranium enrichment cascade during operations.
DOE and its contractors sent samples to several DOE national laboratories and to Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. in Tennessee in efforts to develop a method for recovering the uranium or treating and disposing of the material. However, proposed methods were not cost effective and much of the material would still remain without a disposal path.
Recent Portsmouth Site efforts with DOE headquarters resulted in qualification of decontamination and decommissioning contractor Fluor-BWXT's (FBP) Nuclear Safety and Quality Assurance program, and the Savannah River Packaging Group and Paragon Industries provided the package that allowed FBP to safely ship the material most effectively.
The Portsmouth waste management team completed repackaging of the HEUFS in March this year. All shipping and disposition activities were completed in May.
DOE's Cid Voth, the waste management project director at Portsmouth, said the accomplishment was made possible by cooperation among a variety of entities with talented professionals.
"This project could only be completed with excellent teamwork among DOE, Wastren-Advantage security, a variety of FBP organizations, and the Savannah River Packaging Group," Voth said. "There was tremendous effort and dedication to accomplish this task by the people involved."
A 30-gallon inner container package is placed into the thermal-designed outer container package.

Multi-County Culvert Project
Set To Begin Next Week
Traffic impacts should be minimal during construction
Chillicothe
(Tuesday, July 5, 2016) -
Contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation are set to begin operations for a culvert rehabilitation project on three routes in Adams, Brown and Pike counties.
Crews from WAI Construction Group will be installing culvert liners at locations on state Route 32 in Adams County, U.S. Route 68 in Brown County and S.R. 772 in Pike County. More specifically, the culverts are located on S.R. 32 between C.R. 127 (Black Hollow Road) and C.R. 333 (White Pine Road); on U.S. 68 at the southern corporation limit of Fayetteville, just north of T.R. 581 (Ohio Street); and on S.R. 772, just north of S.R. 220
Contractors are scheduled to begin Monday, July 11, starting on S.R. 772 in Pike County. As most work will be conducted off the roadway, there should be little to no impact to motorists throughout construction. However, traffic on two-lane routes will be maintained by flaggers as needed when crews are working at designated locations.
WAI Construction Group of Piketon, Ohio, was awarded a contract for approximately $286,809 in May to complete the project, and all work should be finished in late summer.
For additional information on lane and road closures caused by construction, accidents, flooding or other related traffic events throughout the state, visit ODOT on the web at
