City staff and local consultant, Keri Silvyn, will be on hand to answer questions about "our" central segments and the intersections at Campbell/Grant, First/Grant, Tucson Blvd/Grant. The coalition has a committee which has been researching the options at the intersections and has prepared questions for the city staff. Will the Grant Road Project honor the existing Neighborhood Plans (approved by city) when developing the intersections? Will it honor the central segments-no overlay promise? | RESPONSE TO RECENT FLOODING |
(excerpted from Ward 6 newsletter)
"Two weeks ago, midtown suffered a two-inch downpour in 30 minute. Trees were uprooted, streets became impassable, and several homes flooded. While it's not the first time Tucson has seen this, and while it won't be the last, I felt we could put some protocols in place to help mitigate the impacts when things like this happen again. First let me thank the many city staff members, representatives from Sun Tran, and representative from the county for joining in a large meeting we held last week with midtown residents to talk about what had occurred, and how we can respond differently when it happens again.
It was a productive conversation. Some of the outcomes from the meeting relate to ways residents will be able to help manage storm impacts. We'll work with the county to make sand bags available at distribution sites around the city..."
"We'll also work with our
Environmental Services drivers to give them the liberty to bypass certain roads during large rain events. Even though their trucks are pretty immune to stalling out, they create waves which exacerbate the impacts on homes alongside the streets they're driving on. You might be passed over for a trash pickup, but your house won't end up under water from the truck's wake.
Sun Tran already has route change protocols in place. Their drivers have information in hand so if rains occur, they know how to react on certain routes. Contact Sun Tran for the specific information if you're a bus rider and want to know ahead of time whether a route you travel might be affected during monsoon storms.
The county has rain gauges that alert some of their personnel what's coming our way as storms approach. I've asked if they can make
storm alerts
available to residents - possibly through a cell phone emergency alert system, or through an app you can download. They feel confident something like that can be done, and are working in concert with the City Manager to sort out the details. I'll make sure to send out that information as soon as they get it in place.
After storms, our TDOT employees are out 24 hours a day working to clean alleys, debris on the roadways, downed trees, and all the rest. They deserve credit for the hard work they put into rehabilitating the city this time of year. If you know of specific areas that need attention, give the Streets Division a call at 791-3154 or email them a description of the issue with the exact location to T[email protected]. It's triage based on severity of impact, so it may take a little time to resolve all of the issues. As a longer-term strategy, we discussed working to divert some of the storm runoff. The city does not have a large scale, sub-grade storm water system like we had back east. That decision was made decades ago, and there's no way we're going to install such a system now. The enormous cost for the benefits would make no sense. But there are ways we can help soften the impact of our monsoons.
Your neighborhood association leaders may have recently asked you for information on whether or not your home has flooded as a result of wash or street runoff in the past. That request is coming from my office. If water from the street has flooded your house, or if you know people who have experienced this, please let us know through this form: https://www.tucsonaz.gov/ward-6/residential-flood-data-collection. We'll supply the data we assemble to the county, via our Transportation Director. With it, they'll try to identify locations where things like water detention basins might be installed upstream of flood-prone areas to ease some of the worst impacts. We don't have real estate on the magnitude of the Cherry Fields, which are south on Campbell, to turn into major catchments, but if we can find locations for several smaller ones, the cumulative results might save some properties downstream. So start thinking about if and when you've been flooded, ask your neighbors to do the same, and let us know.
If you can't use the website form, call us at 791.4601 and we'll help you fill it out. Anybody can buy flood insurance. You don't need to live in a floodplain. I know of some residents who are looking into it based on the recent storm. We'll get these other strategies in motion and hopefully as the monsoon season develops more fully, everyone will be a little better prepared for its impacts.

Come the monsoons, Jefferson Park celebrates the annual flooding of Vine Avenue with their annual Rubber Ducky Race. The "Duck Committee" monitors the weather reports, predicts the Duck Run, announces the date and time by an announcement to the neighborhood googlegroup and our Facebook pages, and braves the flood to release the Duckies. | RED TAGS - A RENEWED EFFORT |
(excerpted from Ward 6 newsletter) "A Red Tag is assessed to properties at which loud parties, public drunkenness, underage drinking, and other intrusive activities take place. There are fines involved, along with escalating sanctions for repeat offenses.
We've held multiple meetings at the Ward 6 office about this. TPD officers go over the conditions that can give rise to violations of the ordinance with neighborhood representatives, and they offer advice on what neighbors should do when they see the offending behaviors. We also recently held a study session to talk about how we can better control these incidents. School's out now, but in advance of its resumption, TPD is making some proactive moves.
All of this falls under the new emphasis on community policing we've seen implemented with the arrival of Chief Magnus. TPD formed an internal working group that's gathering data related to where we're seeing these intense parties. Beginning next month, these areas will be targeted for major public education campaigns. Information will come in the form of new pamphlets, mailers, and social media communications. Training and coordination is being conducted in partnership between TPD and the UA. It's all aimed at enforcement and follow-up. TPD has also dedicated an officer to administering the program.
Some of the duties that officer will be assigned include following up with the owners of properties that have been red tagged, tracking repeat complaints, and working directly with neighborhood leadership to get a handle on those properties. He'll also be involved with the preparation of court cases associated with the citations. It's our hope that this full court press will make an impact on judges when these cases come before them. If more meaningful penalties are made to stick, we should see a diminution in repeat offenses. The meetings we've been holding on quality of life issues bear fruit. This is one example of outcomes, the benefits of which we're hoping you see early this fall. " (Excerpted from Ward 6 Newsletter)

GREEN COMMITTEE - Park Adoption needs you!

The park at the east end of Edison has been adopted by the JPNA Green Committee through "Tucson Clean and Beautiful". We call it Edison Plaza. When the neighborhood makes good on its promise to maintain it, a sign will be posted indicating Jefferson Park has adopted the area.
So, BYOB (bring your own bag) and the kids, meet at "Edison Plaza", get exercise, and have fun. Third Saturday's of the month 6 am to 8 am until September--then later in the day. Watch for reminders on the list serve.
Thanks Ricardo and Angela for last Saturday's work. We hope others arrive to help on the next third Saturday, July 16.

HIGH HEAT PROMPTS WARNINGS
|
With the National Weather Service predicting high temperatures around 106 degrees for the next few days, it's a good time to get a refresher on heat safety, especially staying hydrated when outdoors. In a Tucson 12 video linked below, the Tucson Fire Department offers other tips on staying safe in the heat. It's also a good thing to remember to keep your pets cool. Most pet stores sell dog booties to protect the animals from hot sidewalks and asphalt, but veterinarians recommend pets stay out of the heat during the hottest part of the day. If you can, it's best to leave your pets indoors and make sure they have plenty of water.
