Vendor News
----------------------
Find your secrets to summer at the Hollywood Farmers Market this Saturday. If cooling down is the goal then stop by and say hello to the Gelato Maestro, the Italian sweet cream gelato, melon sorbetto or one of the other dozen handmade creamy creations are just the trick. We'll also have Stellar Pop with their out of this world ice pops featuring all organic ingredients and fun seasonal flavors to keep your taste buds happy.

It's cucumber season, and that means it's time for big batches of gazpacho and fresh summer salads all the time. Many farmers are offering specials for purchasing several cukes, so find your favorites and stock up. Get some fresh berries, juice them up with a cucumber and you have your self a homemade liquado in no time.

Portland Bicycle Outfitters
will also be on deck offering free bike repair and maintenance to any two-wheeler that comes through their stall at the far northwest end of Hancock Street. If you can't find them just ask at the Information Booth and we'll get you there. Also on board this Saturday: Cardamon Hills Trading Co., Fringe Meadery, House Spirits Distillery, and Portland Bitters Project.

Hancock Street Painting this Sunday, July 17th!
----------------------
The big day is finally almost here: this Sunday, July 17th, we will be painting this beautiful 90-foot long street mural on our block of Hancock Street! (If you're having trouble visualizing it, the stream is in front of where the music tent is on market day). This mural will transform the farmers market and you can be part of its creation! We'll start painting at 10am and probably go until 6pm or so; feel free to join us at any time.

Cooking demo with Astha Mitra
----------------------
This Saturday, chef Astha Mitra will be doing a cooking demonstration at the market. Astha teaches Indian cooking classes at Turnip the Heat Cooking School. She'll be making Vegetable Charchari, which is an East Indian veggie stir fry, with spices typical to that region of India. The demo will run from about 9am to 11:30am in the middle of Hancock St. (near the east entrance of the market) - stop by for a taste!

Making and Freezing Basil Pesto
by Sarah Broderick, former HFM market manager
To me, summer just isn't summer without fresh basil pesto and everyone has their own favorite recipe. I will not try to sway you from yours, but here is one definitely worth trying.

3 cups loosely packed basil leaves
1 cup loosely packed flat leaf parsley
4-6 garlic cloves
1/2 cup olive oil
3/4 cup toasted walnuts
1/4 - 1/2 cup finely grated parmigiano reggiano (omit if freezing)
1 teaspoon salt or to taste
finely ground black pepper to taste (optional)
Lightly toast walnuts in a dry pan over low or medium-low heat. Stir and watch carefully to make sure they don't burn or get too brown. Remove walnuts from pan and set aside to cool.

Pulse garlic cloves in a blender or food processor and add handfuls of basil and parsley leaves until everything is coarsely chopped. Add toasted walnuts, olive oil, parmigiano reggiano, and salt and pepper to taste. Blend. Add more olive oil if the mixture gets too thick. Taste and adjust proportions as you see fit!

For freezing:

There are a couple ways to freeze pesto. I like the freezer tray method but some people prefer to fill ramekins or 4 oz jelly jars. Here are directions for both.

Using a spatula or spoon, fill an ice cube tray with pesto. Once frozen, pop the cubes into a freezer bag. Try to get as much air out of the bag as you can and consider double bagging for protection. To freeze into ramekins or jelly jars, fill the containers, pour a thin layer of olive oil on top, wrap in saran wrap and freeze. If you have lids for the jelly jars, use them. Don't forget to label with the date and contents!

Remember to omit the cheese if you are going to freeze a batch, it tastes so much better with the cheese added just before serving.

Freezing pesto will remind you of why you love living in Oregon this winter as you thaw your pesto and enjoy a little Oregon summer in the rain.
