LETTER FROM THE INTERIM PRESIDENT
|
I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful Minnesota weather over the 4th of July weekend.
US Bank Stadium Construction Completed
With the recent completion of construction, we are looking forward to upcoming events in the new US Bank stadium. Prior to the pre-season opener there are a couple of events that may be of interest to Chamber members.
US Bank stadium will host a Grand Opening Open House on July 23rd from 9 am until 6 pm and again on July 24th from 10 am until 5 pm. Tickets are free and the event is open to the public. Click here for ticket information.
On August 3rd, defending Premier League champions Chelsea and A.C. Milan will meet at 8 pm for the first soccer game in the new stadium. Good tickets are still available and Chamber members can obtain a special ticket rate by

Minneapolis Minimum Wage Proposal
You may have read recently that advocates of a $15/hour minimum wage have petitioned the City of Minneapolis to add a charter amendment to the ballot this fall that would provide for minimum wage increases. We have been monitoring this matter very closely and communicating our concerns to city officials.
6,869 valid signatures are required to allow this matter to proceed for a City Council determination on whether to place this issue on the ballot. The Minneapolis City Clerk's office will now determine if 6,869 of the nearly 20,000 signatures submitted are valid. If so, the City Council will determine if this is an appropriate proposed charter amendment to be included on the ballot.
We understand that the Minneapolis City Attorney has drafted an opinion on this issue but do not know her opinion. Our position is that this is not a valid item for submission to the voters as a charter amendment under the current City charter and that action by the City to raise the minimum wage is preempted by the State of Minnesota minimum wage law.
We will continue to keep you informed on this issue. If the matter moves forward, we will fully activate the Workforce Fairness Coalition we helped establish last year to convey the perspective of business owners of all size businesses and business associations throughout the city.
Minneapolis Big Build Have you heard about the $2 billion of major projects that are transforming Minneapolis? Our friends at Meet Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Downtown Council recently launched an effort to inform the public about the new amenities that will enhance Minneapolis and our region for everyone who lives, works, visits and plays here. From the redesign of the Nicollet Mall, to US Bank stadium, the new Commons Park, a redesigned Target Center, renovations at the Sculpture Garden, Walker Art Center, the new Water Works project on the riverfront and more, great things are happening in our community. Click here to check it out.
