Westland Receives $100,000 Grant for Sports Complex in Norwayne

Westland, MI - At the July 5th meeting of the Westland City Council, Mayor Wild accepted a $100,000 check from State Representative Robert Kosowski procured from the State of Michigan to build a sports complex in the Norwayne area.

The project cannot begin until October 1, 2016, but ideas are already pouring in on how the money will be used.  The sports complex will include amenities such as fields, bleachers and possibly a walking path and playground equipment.  This grant was made possible by the hard work and support of State Representative Robert Kosowski, Speaker of the House Kevin Cotter, Chair of the House Appropriations Committee Al Pscholka and Minority Vice Chair Harvey Santana.

The new recreation area has been named Lincoln Field after the former elementary school which was located in that spot.  The field is located on Grand Traverse next to  Cayley Park.  The city will be leasing the property from the Wayne-Westland Community School District for $1.

"The Wayne-Westland Community School District has a great working relationship with the City of Westland," commented Assistant Superintendent John Albrecht.  "We are excited to see the development of new amenities in this area."

"This is the second major grant the City of Westland has received for recreational improvements to the Norwayne area." commented Mayor Wild.  "None of this would be possible without the wonderful support we have received from State Representative Robert Kosowski and his colleagues at the State level as well as the Wayne-Westland Community School District.  The children of the Norwayne community will greatly benefit from these recreational enhancements by having more resources and places to go to engage in healthy and active lifestyles"

In April, the City of Westland received a $175,000 grant which went to improvements on the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center which is also located in the historic Norwayne community.  Those funds will go to the addition of a baseball diamond complex, basketball court, picnic shelter. playground equipment and improvements to the parking lot.
