The Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) has awarded the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER) with the 2016 State Leadership in Clean Energy Award for developing a pilot program to explore how distributed solar energy could provide value to Rhode Island's electric grid and help cities and towns achieve energy savings.
OER's System Reliability Procurement Solar Distributed Generation pilot project was one of six clean energy programs nationwide to win an award for its outstanding accomplishments.
The goal of the pilot program - launched in Tiverton and Little Compton - was to better understand the costs and benefits of solar distributed generation and its ability to reduce peak loads on the distribution system. The effects could help defer traditional and more costly utility capital investments, and achieve utility cost savings for cities and towns.
For more information about Rhode Island's pilot project visit the CESA website.
The Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER), the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), and its partners kicked off the State's "Drive Clean" campaign on Saturday, June 4, 2016 during the World Match Racing Tour
at Fort Adams State Park. As part of the event, the public was invited to test drive some of the latest electric vehicles (EVs) on the market.
Eighty-five members of the public test drove an EV at Saturday's event, and an additional 29 participated as passengers. The transportation sector accounts for 40 percent of total carbon emissions in Rhode Island. As part of its efforts to promote cleaner transportation modes and reduce emissions, the state offers a suite of purchase incentives for EVs through its
DRIVE program. As part of Saturday's event, several new generation EVs were on display, including Tesla, Nissan and Chevrolet models.
For more information on the DRIVE program, please contact Ryan Cote of the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources at (401) 574-9118.

The Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER), the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation, and SmartPower announced they are extending the deadline for participation in the Providence, Bristol and Warren Solarize Rhode Island programs to August 19, 2016.
Solarize Rhode Island aims to increase the adoption of small-scale solar electricity in participating communities through a competitive tiered pricing structure that increases the savings for everyone as more homeowners sign contracts.
Solarize Rhode Island team members have participated in more than 45 community events since the launch of the Providence, Bristol and Warren campaigns on March 31. Now in its third year, the Solarize Rhode Island campaign has resulted in more than 400 residents and business owners signing contracts for small-scale solar electricity systems across 12 communities.
For more information on the Solarize Rhode Island program, please contact
Shauna Beland
of the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources at (401) 574-9111.
