PULSE@MassChallenge Digital Health Lab Launches in the Longwood Medical Area

, and executives from the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership, MassChallenge, and Baystate Health's TechSpring digital health center for the announcement of the first major pillar of the Massachusetts Digital Health Initiative: the opening of a new digital healthcare lab,
PULSE@MassChallenge
. This innovative, startup-friendly facility features 8,000 square feet of physical space located within Boston's Longwood Medical Area, adjacent to world-class hospitals, centers for healthcare innovation, and technology startups.
Managed
by the global accelerator MassChallenge and featuring support from digital health experts at TechSpring in Western Massachusetts, PULSE@MassChallenge will connect entrepreneurs with critical resources necessary to help them grow. Programming at the space will include a start-up accelerator program for digital health companies, networking events, panel discussions, pitch contests, and co-working opportunities.
On behalf of the Commonwealth, MeHI will provide a $250,000 grant to both MassChallenge ($170K) and TechSpring ($80K) to support staffing, events, data challenges, and other programs during the first year of operations. Over the coming year, the PULSE@MassChallenge space will also play an important role in the launch of the statewide Initiative's other programs.

MeHI Launches the Connected Communities Implementation Grants
On June 14, 2016, at Brockton Neighborhood Health Center, MeHI announced $3,038,000 in grants to drive community-level collaboration among healthcare providers using innovative technologies. The grants were made through MeHI's Connected Communities Implementation Grant program, a statewide effort which seeks to enhance collaboration and communication among healthcare providers within a community through the use of health IT, including electronic health records and health information exchanges.
At the event, MeHI Director Laurance Stuntz, announced awards to seven Massachusetts healthcare organizations, which each received grants of $434,000 to support collaborative projects. These organizations are working with a total of 78 partner organizations across Massachusetts.
The seven Massachusetts organizations managing the grants in their respective regions are:
- Behavioral Health Network - Springfield
- Berkshire Medical Center - Pittsfield
- Brockton Neighborhood Health Center - Brockton
- Cape Cod Healthcare - Hyannis
- Lowell General PHO - Lowell
- Reliant Medical Group - Worcester
- Whittier Independent Practice Association (IPA) - Newburyport

New CEHRT Developer Transparency Tool Designed to Make Choosing an EHR Even Easier
National Coordinator Karen DeSalvo, MD, announced a joint effort between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT to make selecting certified electronic health record software less confusing. The goal of the tool is to create a more transparent health IT marketplace to promote competition, discourage information blocking, and make developers accountable to the needs of health care professionals and other health IT purchasers.
The tool includes a current list of each software developer's detailed information about their certified health IT products, including limitations and types of costs that a purchaser or user may encounter in the course of implementing or using the developer's technology. Additional information, including information about developers' compliance with these requirements, is available on ONC's Certified Health IT Product List.

Tech, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll
 Boston University's Office of Technology Development hosts "Tech, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll" (TDRR) on July 12th, a networking event designed to connect scientists and engineers with entrepreneurs, investors, and innovators. Started in 2010, the event highlights emerging technologies from Boston University's research programs in the fields of life sciences, physical sciences, medical technology, new ventures, and student-based ventures, with additional participation from applied and translational research centers.
