JULY 2016
Have a Safe & Happy
July 4th
PRESIDENT'S PEN
It's early July and the skies have opened up to provide us with summer rain and race fans here in central Florida!  Even though summer activities & events make it seem like it never slows down around here, at the Museum it is one of our quieter times of the year.

If you missed our annual picnic in May, you also missed the installation of our new Board of Directors.  I would like to welcome Cornelia Austin, Charles Miller and Walter Flannagan who have all joined the Board of Directors as new 3 year inductees.  We are excited to have them and the broad range of experiences and perspectives that they will be bringing to the organization.  I would also like to extend a special thank you to our 3 outgoing board members as well - Irene Beckham, Virginia Schow & Norm Decker.  Our organization and Museum is a collective representation of the efforts of these and many others who worked alongside them to help organize and develop the historical showcase that our Museum is today.

If you haven't heard already, the new "Smyrnea Settlement" book that was produced by our own Archaeology Team of Dr. Roger Grange & Dot Moore is now complete and available at the Museum.  This wonderful book is a culmination of years of field work and compilation efforts by Roger and Dot, and is a valuable addition to the information that we provide to the public.  Not only that, it is a great looking book with photos, maps and diagrams to support the professionally produced publication.  Stop by the Museum and pick up a copy for yourself today.

Speaking of the Museum, it was again awarded the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence making this the 3rd year in a row that our visitors have voted us one of their favorite highlights of the New Smyrna Beach area.  Take a moment and to look in the mirror and smile because if you support the historical society and Museum in either deed or donation, this award is a direct reflection of your efforts and what you have helped create, thank you!

IN MEMORIAM

Mysteries at the Museum
Have you ever heard of a local newspaper called the Inlet Advocate? If you know anything about it drop us an email to tell us what you know. We do know that there were at least two issues distributed.
"Do you have a local mystery you would like help with? Submit your photo or question to the museum at sevhs@bellsouth.net. "

The archaeology staff is elated in having the new Smyrnea Settlement booklet finished, printed and copies delivered to the museum this week. But there is no rest for the wicked because we have returned once again to the tasks of writing formal site reports on two Turnbull period houses we excavated eons ago (one in 1996-1997and one in 2001-2006). Dot has continued her other job of being the defacto City Archaeologist with some assistance with Sarah Bennett. Roger has been to Ireland and back to see  New Grange, a gigantic passage grave older than  Cheops pyramid (Irish site not named for his family though).
