Letter from Pastor Melissa
Dear Beloved Community,

In July we celebrate our nation's independence. While our nation was being developed, so too was Methodism in America. J. Ellsworth Kalas writes in his book, Being United Methodist: What It Means Why It Matters, "When we come to the story of Methodism in America, we will see that this radically inclusive approach was made to order for the American dream (indeed, in a sense, it probably helped to shape the dream) and that, as long as the Methodist reached out with such democratic abandon, they grew." Since the beginning of the Methodist movement we welcome people into the circle of God's grace to encourage each other in our journey toward a life transformed by Christ.

We open our circle by welcoming people in many ways this July. We welcome Valencia High School Choir on Sunday, July 3rd who will be sharing the music they will be performing in France. We celebrate the return of the Messenger Gospel Choir in August. This choir invites youth 7-12 to participate in a choir that will be much more then a singing group. We welcome many children onto our campus for VBS  the week of July 18-22. Please pray for the children who will be here to learn about God's love and a life of faith. We will be dedicating our VBS teachers on Sunday, July 17th - please be present in worship to show your support of those spending the week widening the circle of God's grace for children in our church and in our community.  Then, on Sunday, July 24th, we welcome the children and their families into worship for VBS Sunday celebration. You will want to be present to help welcome and share the grace of God with our visitors.

In addition to these welcoming events in July, I want to invite you to be part of widening our circle of grace and growing in Christ. On Sunday, August 28 at 5pm we will have our first Family Fun Night. See the article in this issue of the Circuit Rider.

Blessing of growing in Christ together,
Pastor Melissa

Family Fun Night!

All are invited to attend this exciting new opportunity! Family Fun Night is a night we come together as families for a meal and for growing in our faith. First, when we say "family" we mean anyone; you could be a family of one, a family of four and/or a family of many.  Family for us means all the members of the family of God. Each Sunday night starting on August 28th at 5pm, we will gather for a meal then after dinner we will break up into groups for study. There will be a men's group, a women's group, a youth group and a children's group. This will give us all time to be together for a meal and to then be in a study specific to each interest and need.  We are all busy and don't need another night out, but this way we have one night out to grow in God's grace and to grow as a family.  Plan on being part of the fun on Aug. 28 th

Valencia High School Choir Performing

The Valencia Choir program consists of almost 200 students in six separate choirs. Christine Tavares-Mocha has been the choral director at Valencia High School for 14 years. Under her direction, the VHS Choirs have been the featured choir in Carnegie Hall (New York), St. Peter's Basilica, The Vatican (Rome), St. Mark's Cathedral (Venice) St. Patrick's Cathedral (Ireland), Westminster Abbey (London), Salzburg Cathedral (Austria) and featured in the London Olympics. The Concert, Chamber and Women's Vocal Ensembles have repeatedly achieved the ratings of "Gold" and "Choir of the Festival." Each year Valencia has had multiple students in California All-State Honor Choir and All State Jazz Choir. Notable awards are the ACSF A-Cappella Competition $5,000 first place grand prize, 2015 National Monterey Jazz Festival Showcase Performance, a showcase performance at the international JEN (Jazz Education Network) Conference, and winning three 2015 National Downbeat Magazine "Outstanding Ensemble and Soloist" awards. The choir's highest honor is being able to perform and sing for audiences at home and abroad. This year the Valencia Choirs are incredibly excited to be singing in the Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral in July. They will be performing for Santa Clarita United Methodist Church July 3rd!

J.A.M. Club

July will be a busy month for our Christian Education team as we provide our Sunday Morning JAM  time (Jesus and Me) for the children of our church, for children who are visiting church members and to children from the community.  Many people worship at different churches during the summer months, and we want to provide a welcoming experience.  If you can volunteer to teach on a Sunday you're in town, please contact Marianne Smith @ (661)904-5312 or Melissa Day @
[email protected] .  You can pick up your lesson a week in advance and all crafts, etc. are ready for you on Sunday morning.  It is a good way for you to get to know the children of our church.  They are a bright, inquisitive group of kids!

Our team is also planning our annual Vacation Bible School with a Surf Shack theme the week of July 18th.  Leaders will be Lifeguards and children will be Surfers as we learn of the many gifts God shares with us.  We can always use additional adult help with this venture, and if you are working, we can accept donations for lunches and snacks.  Jane Bates will be running the kitchen along with her team of volunteers.  It does take a whole village to keep our children engaged and excited about being members of God's Wonderful World.  I would ask each and every one of you to pray about how you can contribute to nurturing our children. They pray for our church every week.  Thank you!

The Santa Clarita Valley UM churches will be working together to feed the homeless who come to the Bridges to Home for dinner.  During the summer, the shelter is not open to spend the night but 25 people come to dinner.  We will provide a main dish, salad, side dish, rolls and serve the meal the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 6:00. VUMC will provide meals the second and fourth Tuesdays and Friendly Valley will provide the sack lunches.  We will also provide transport of the lunches from Friendly Valley to the shelter.  This is a great way for high school students to earn community service hours or scouts to work on their badges. Please visit the Outreach table to see how you can help or contact Candy Holsenbeck at 661-733-5744.

We will be hosting homeless families on July 3rd - If you would like to help, please sign-up at the Missions-Outreach Table on Sundays.

Part 5: 50 Ways to Welcome New People
Be more inviting.

39.  Hold an Open House Sunday at least once a year.

40.  Organize a "bring-friend" Sunday at least once a year.

41.  Extend extra hospitality during back-to-school time, Christmas and Easter, when persons are most likely to consider visiting a church.

42.  Start a personal invitation ministry.  Three out of four people attend a church for the first time because they were invited.  Yet less than half of church members say they have invited someone in the last year.

43.  Provide training to members on how to invite others to church.

44.  Print special invitations to Christmas Eve services that people can deliver to friends.

45.  Plan special events - concerts, lectures, etc. - that appeal to those outside the church and that members feel comfortable inviting someone to.

46.  Have special recognition Sundays for scout groups, preschool families, or other community groups meeting in your church to encourage them to attend worship.
