REMEMBER SAFETY FOR PETS AND CHILDREN
during this Holiday weekend
"It Was Just
For a Minute..."
Because an errand meant to take that proverbial minute is 60 seconds too long when a dog is left unattended in a car in the heat.
Why?
Because, even on mild summer days, with a car parked in the shade and the windows cracked, the INSIDE temperature can rapidly reach dangerous levels for animals and people.
Why?
Because a car acts like a greenhouse, trapping and magnifying the sun's strength and heat. Both the air and upholstery temperature can rise so rapidly that a dog can't cool down.
Why?
Because a dog's normal body temperature is about 102° F. Raise it briefly by only two degrees, and heat exhaustion, brain damage, even death can occur.
Why?
Because dogs don't sweat. They can only cool themselves by panting and releasing heat through their paws.
Despite repeated warnings in the media, flyers distributed by animal welfare groups, and word of mouth,
countless animals still die needlessly each year from heatstroke. Despite the axiom that one person can't make a difference, in this type of situation,
one person can make ALL the difference. And that person may be YOU.
If you see a dog in distress inside a car parked on the street or in a parking lot, note the make and model of the car, as well as its license plate number.
Call the police, your local ASPCA branch, Humane Society and/or animal control immediately.
Watch the dog closely for the more obvious signs of heatstroke: exaggerated panting (or the sudden stopping of panting); an anxious or staring expression; restlessness; excessive salivation, tremors and vomiting. While waiting for help, you may - wherever possible - choose to act on your own.
If a window is opened or a door unlocked, extricate the dog cautiously and carefully -- either alone or with assistance. Then, get him into an air-conditioned car or nearby building. Otherwise, lay him down in a cool, shady place. Wet him with cool water, but never apply ice to his body. Fan him vigorously to speed the evaporation process, which, in turn, will cool the blood and reduce his temperature. Give him cool water to drink or even ice cream to lick.
Hopefully, by now, help will have arrived, and you may have saved some neglectful owner's family pet.
A gentle reminder: don't YOU become that same neglectful owner.
Remember there's no such thing as "just for a minute."

Adoptable Dog of the Month
My name is Rocko. I am 8 years old and weigh 27 pounds. I need a new home because my owner is ill and no longer can care for me. I am being fostered in Omaha, NE.
I am a beautiful boy who is well adjusted to home life. I love balls and squeaky toys. I'm a real charmer and am quickly adjusting to my foster home. My foster parents are getting an idea of what commands and tricks I know -- things like sit, stay, bye bye, and potty. I am quick to obey commands.
I am curious like the cat I lived with and a bit mischievous. I keep a close eye on the door and have to be told to stay when someone comes and goes.
I can easily climb a baby gate but I do not disturb the house, and I do my business outside. I am quiet all night and sleep in my own bed.
I need a home with no children or other dogs. I am truly a prince of a pup and would love to find a couple or single human to be my furever companion.

Q: How do I know when it is time?
A: Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts. After all, pet owners know their pet better than anyone.
Making the actual decision is the hardest part. It is never easy. You will shed many tears which is expected as you love your pet. There is no single rule that can be followed for when it is time to help your best friend "cross the rainbow bridge."
I personally look at euthanasia as a blessing and gift to a suffering pet. Our pets do not deserve to hurt. They deserve the gift of a peaceful passing, sparing them from pain and physical suffering.
 Making the decision to euthanize a pet can feel gut-wrenching, murderous, and immoral. Families feel like they are letting their pet down or that they are the cause of their friend's death. Many owners experiencing the decline or terminal illness of a pet will generally wait until the very end to make the difficult decision. They are fearful of doing it too soon and giving up without a good fight. In a majority of these cases most owners regret to have waited so long. You reflect back on the past days, weeks, or months, and feel guilty for putting your pet through those numerous trips to the vet or uncomfortable medical procedures that did not improve their pet's quality of life.
During these times we need to think with our head and put our heart aside. Sometimes, articulating or writing down your thoughts can make the right path more apparent. I personally want to remember my dog. I do not want to remember him crying out, unable to get out of bed on his own, and/or struggling to do the normal daily things such as walking, standing, eating and breathing.
Do what is best for your four legged friend and know, "We only part to meet again."

Dogs Die in Cars Everyday
|
"Tell my heart the story again about the little dog, Kiki, abandoned in a ditch who could not see and could not hear, but had a heart as big as the moon and she lived happily ever after with her furrever family.
"
Kiki was found in a ditch in late November 2015 by Cindi in south Missouri. She was suffering from severe dehydration, had a severe ear infection and very bad teeth, was covered in fleas and ticks, emaciated, with one eye already ruptured and the
 other on its way (first pic).
She recovered from her in
juries as her spirit stayed strong (pic of Logan and Kiki).
On January 30, 2016 her adopting family drove 8 hours one way to meet her and take her home.
 A statement from her adoptive family: "There is nothing like a Boston smile! For all you who remember, this is Kiki that was found nearly dead in Missouri. We renamed her to Ilyss when we adopted her earlier this year. She is doing quite well in Colorado, living it up at the lake." (camping pic)
This is what rescue is all about. Her foster parents miss her but know she is in good hands and enjoying life to the fullest.

Consider the following when figuring out how often and how much to feed your Boston --
(so many people under feed)
1. Bostons are NOT known to be a breed of obesity. This is the case when Bostons are fed table scraps, canned food or have a medical issue
2. Bostons have a high metabolism so what you may consider to be moderate feeding may not be enough for your Boston causing them to want to eat all the time.
3. Bostons are considered to be an active breed. If you have a high energy dog it is important they are getting enough healthy fats, protein and calories
4. Ask yourself how often you eat in a 24-hour period and I guarantee you the answer will not be just once or twice a day. So why do you expect your dog to follow that rule, especially if they are active.
5. Food = Fuel. It is important to keep your dog's stomach content and not always feeling starved. Smaller amounts of food multiple times a day is beneficial to keeping your Boston fueled.
6. Alternative snacks other than using dog food is fruits and vegetables. Test different healthy foods to see what he likes. I have seen dogs eat carrots, lettuce, cauliflower, apples, etc.
7. You may find you need to adjust the measurement of food in the summer months when your dog is outside walking and playing more than they may be during the winter months when we are stuck in the house.
8. Remember that the "recommended amounts" on the back of the food bag IS JUST THAT - a "recommended" amount.

AGE is just a number
I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.
Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.
MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
