Happy Fourth of July! S ummer is officially underway!

As you make plans for your annual Independence Day get together, consider healthy brain food choices for the grill. Sw apping creamy salads and fatty burgers for green leafy salads, grilled fish like wild salmon or chicken, veggie kabobs and fres h blueberry desserts  not only save you some extra calories, but can also protect your brain health. Research shows that these brain-boosting foods can keep your brain cells working properly, helping you stay sharp and attentive, and can help protect against diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Of course, coupling diet with regular chiropractic care is an ideal recipe for good health. Keep up with your regular visits throughout the summer so we can help you function at your best!

We wish you and your families a happy and safe holiday weekend!

Atypical ADHD and the Over-Aroused Brain

Are ADHD stimulants triggering undesirable side effects or simply not working for you or your child? An over-aroused brain may be the reason why your ADHD meds are ineffective.

The most common form of ADHD is triggered by under-aroused brain waves; therapy for this population is geared toward shifting those brain waves into higher gear in order to manage symptoms.  But for approximately 15% of people with ADHD who experience over-aroused brain waves, stimulant meds can worsen their condition, or trigger other symptoms such as anxiety, tics, compulsivity, OCD and rumination.  A brain map can identify these specific "high gear" brain-wave patterns and can be useful in neurofeedback brain-wave training to help normalize these patterns.  Dr. Keri Chiappino explains in the video above.

If your child is perpetually "running in high gear" and traditional treatments have failed, please give our office a call to take advantage of our QEEG brain map special and to learn more how neurofeedback can help retrain the brain safely and effectively.  BrainCore neurofeedback therapy can provide long-lasting, and in many cases permanent relief of ADHD symptoms. 631.265.1223.

Brain Scans May Soon Be a Part of Your Annual Physical
How well do you know your total health numbers? Cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass numbers are indicators of your overall health and are figures that we are most commonly familiar with.   But what about your brain health?  How familiar are you with your brain's vital signs?

Researchers say your annual wellness visit may someday soon include a scan of your brain waves. An electroencephalogram (EEG) monitors brain-wave activity, and provides an objective measurement of dysregulation in the brain's electrical activity that often underlies a wide range of brain-based conditions such as ADHD, Alzheimer's, anxiety and depression. In addition to identifying dysregulation, EEG brain maps can be used as a means to establish a baseline measurement of brain function before injuries occur such as concussion, traumatic brain injury, dementia and other neurological conditions.
QEEG Brain Map Results

For parents concerned about impact injuries from sports, a preseason quantitative EEG called a QEEG provides a baseline for the child's normal brain-wave activity. This provides crucial data in the unfortunate event of concussion to serve as a comparative basis in a post-injury evaluation and for developing a healing plan with neurofeedback training.  Call us for more information. 631.265.1223.
Antibiotics Cause Gut Disturbances in Babies

smiling-blanket-baby.jpg
A recent Harvard study suggests that antibiotics may disrupt development of intestinal bacteria in babies that are essential not only in food digestion, but also for regulating metabolism and the immune system.

Researchers found that the antibiotic-exposed infants had a reduced diversity of "microbial population" in the gut and also noted the presence of antibiotic-resistant genes.  Disturbances in the beneficial gut microbiome have been linked to diabetes, obesity, asthma and allergies.

Based on the results, researchers advise against prescribing antibiotics during the first three years of life.

In truth, antibiotics  cannot treat viruses, and yet they are often prescribed for ear and respiratory infections, spawning tougher bacteria that ultimately cause longer and more serious infections.  Gentle chiropractic adjustments can help mobilize drainage of the ear in children prone to infections, helping to prevent fluid buildup, and the potential for infection.  In fact, results from another study of children with  ear infections undergoing chiropractic care reported an improvement in 93% of cases, noting a 75% improvement in 10 days or fewer, and 43% with only one or two treatments.

Regular chiropractic care can help keep your child's immune system functioning properly. If your child suffers from recurring ear infections, come in for a visit and see how chiropractic care can provide natural, long-lasting relief.

Is Your Desk Job Killing Your Golf Game?  Acupuncture May Save Your Swing.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common repetitive stress injury that occurs when the median nerve in the wrist is compressed and becomes inflamed, leading to pain, numbness and weakness in the hand, wrist and arm.

Repetitive hand or wrist motions from using a computer keyboard or mouse are often the culprit, however many golfers also are afflicted with CTS as a result of repetitive swing movements.

A new study finds nighttime splinting and electroacupuncture are effective in reducing symptoms.  Study participants noted that the combination of splinting and acupuncture helped improve both function and dexterity.

This month, our licensed acupuncturist Lori Forunato, LAc is offering $25 off an initial acupuncture visit for private pay patients who are experiencing carpal tunnel pain.  Contact the office to learn how acupuncture can help reduce your discomfort and get you back into the swing of things. 631.265.1223.
