Independence Sunday
~
Hear patriotic selections by the Neil Wetzel Quartet!
See Colonial Era Re-enactors!
Experience a Unique Reading of the Declaration of Independence!
~
This annual reading of the Declaration of Independence will be held at historic Zion's 'Liberty Bell' United Church of Christ,  620 W. Hamilton Street, Allentown, this Sunday, July 3. Dr. Neil Wetzel and guest musicians will be playing patriotic selections, including Ray Charles' stirring version of "America the Beautiful" beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Wetzel, shown here with guitarist Mike Lorenz, will also be joined by Paul Rostock on bass and George Hrab on drums. Dr. Wetzel is an assistant professor of music at Moravian College and head of their Jazz Studies program. He also will be our featured "bell ringer" during the Sunday service in which some two dozen participants reenact the protests of the colonists by reading sections of the Declaration, punctuated by the ringing of "Allentown's Liberty Bell.'
The Rev. Bob Stevens will be dressed in the colonial garb of the Rev. Abraham Blumer, pastor of Zion's Church when the Liberty Bell was hidden there during the American Revolution.
This year Pastor Bob will give us a closer look at the writer of the Declaration, Thomas Jefferson, and suggest which bible verse from the the teachings of St. Paul would be most appropriate to describe both Jefferson's ideals and the realities of his life.
Revolutionary War era re-enactors will include Major General Oliver Wolcott, one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence, portrayed by Kevin Titus, accompanied by his bodyguard, portrayed by Michael Esposito.  Sara Brace, Executive Director of the Liberty Bell Museum, also be in colonial garb.
You yourself can get in on the action! Everyone has an opportunity to participate in this re-enactment and rail against King George's 'injuries and usurpations.' Children in attendance are provided with three-corner hats and "mob caps" to wear during the service.
Join us at 10:30 a.m. this Sunday for an enjoyable, educational and inspirational service.
