Dear Reader,

We want you to be free to read a bunch this Independence Weekend!
We have a bunch (more like a mountain) of new-to-us used books and we want to share!
For the month of July, buy any two hardcover used books and get a third book free! Yup, free. Cheap and free actually. The lowest priced book of the trio is your freebie. Used books only. For the month of July.
    Can't beat that!

We'll be closed on July 4 and very likely be celebrating being independent all that day.

Yes, I'm back from art camp and it was awesome. Just the camp alone, The Feather River Camp owned by the city of Oakland, is an amazing facility. Then put a bunch of grown ups together with awesome art teachers and you get a pretty amazing week of creativity. I love it! If you don't know about the camp or the art camp, feel free to ask me about it.

We're having a great event this evening. All about marriage equality and the amazing work that went into making it law. 7pm, be here.

Happy reading!

New and Notable

Zika, The Emerging Epidemic by Donald G. McNeil Jr. $14.95  Well, some people want to know about the origin, what's happening now, and how to protect yourself from it. So, there's a book.
Until recently, Zika once considered a mild disease was hardly a cause for global panic. But as early as August 2015, doctors in northeast Brazil began to notice a trend: many mothers who had recently experienced symptoms of the Zika virus were giving birth to babies with microcephaly, a serious disorder characterized by unusually small heads and brain damage.
By early 2016, Zika was making headlines as evidence mounted and eventually confirmed that microcephaly is caused by the virus, which can be contracted through mosquito bites or sexually transmitted.

Beaks, Bones & Bird Songs by Roger J. Lederer $24.95 When we see a bird flying from branch to branch happily chirping, it is easy to imagine they lead a simple life of freedom, flight, and feathers. What we don't see is the arduous, life-threatening challenges they face at every moment. InBeaks, Bones, and Bird Songs, ornithologist Roger Lederer guides the reader through the myriad, and often almost miraculous, things that birds do every day to merely stay alive. Like the goldfinch, who manages extreme weather changes by doubling the density of their plumage in winter. Or urban birds who navigate traffic through a keen understanding of posted speed limits.

Book Club
To join, read the book and show up. We would love to have you with us.

Next meeting is Thursday, July 21, 6:15. Jenny Offill's novel, Dept. of Speculation.

In the beginning, it was easy to imagine their future. They were young and giddy, sure of themselves and of their love for each other. "Dept. of Speculation" was their code name for all the thrilling uncertainties that lay ahead. Then they got married, had a child and navigated the familiar calamities of family life-a colicky baby, a faltering relationship, stalled ambitions.
When their marriage reaches a sudden breaking point, the wife tries to retrace the steps that have led them to this place, invoking everything from Kafka to the Stoics to doomed Russian cosmonauts as she analyzes what is lost and what remains. In language that shimmers with rage and longing and wit, Offill has created a brilliantly suspenseful love story-a novel to read in one sitting, even as its piercing meditations linger long after the last page.
