A Message from our President,
Keven Steinberg
Thompson, Coe & O'Meara, LLP

Summer is upon us and for those of you who actually read the monthly President's Message, I thought it may be a good change of pace to share what is and has been going on "behind the scenes".

In this regard, we are in the midst of re-structuring our Board of Directors in light of vacancies and in order to bolster the avenue for other members to become future Board Members and Officers.  In this regard, we have appointed and voted on placing Michael Turner of Bearsworth Promotions back to our Board.  We are pleased to have him back and ask that you congratulate him the next time you see him at one of our events.  We are also in the midst of amending our Bylaws to address outdated subject matter and to make these Bylaws more gender friendly.  If you would like to become a future Board Member or Officer, or simply would like to come to a Board Meeting to see what it is like, we invite you with open arms.

As you know members and strong leadership is the life blood of our Chamber.  While we are always trying to get new members to join our Chamber, it is equally important for us to find and groom new leaders.   With new leaders, also comes growth through new visions, ideas and concepts, all of which help invigorate our Chamber year-to-year.  If you are that type of person or know of someone who is, please let us know.  As a longtime Board Member and Officer, I can tell you first hand that this experience is extremely worthwhile from a number of perspectives.  I highly recommend it.

Each year we struggle to some extent in getting new members beyond the normal annual amount.  While our overall membership remains high, it can grow even more.  But we need all of your help and assistance in spreading the word and sharing your experiences with others.  Each new member provides another marketing opportunity for each chamber member and even yourself.  So not only are you helping the Chamber, you are helping other members as well as yourself.  Challenge yourself and others to help our Chamber grow by recruiting new members.

Enjoy your summer and I look forward to hearing of your efforts in helping me and our Board grow the Chamber both internally and externally.

A message from our C.E.O.,
Diana Duenas

I love Pinterest and Google. I'm always looking
for inspiring leadership quotes. Currently, I'm working on a marketing campaign for the Chamber and stumbled upon this quote. I
thought ties in nicely with our "Quality works better than quantity" (we're still finalizing the line but, you get the direction we're going in).

One thing I've learned over the years, I can tell you why the Encino Chamber is better than any
other chamber but, it's always better if you hear it from our members. That's the thought behind the Membership Committee's push to get testimonials from our members. Hopefully, you've noticed them on our website. Feel free to send me yours and your photo. We'll get it up there too.

Along those lines, please give us a 5 star review and make a comment on our Facebook page (comments are what puts you higher on the list) or write a review on Yelp! Your positive experience with us will help us grow the Encino Chamber on the "Quality of our membership, not the quantity."

Business & Professional Development Lunch,
July 19th

Guest Speaker:
L.A. City Controller,
Ron Galperin

Sponsor: Law Office of Mark Levinson

Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin will be the guest speaker of the Encino Chamber lunch on July 19th. On the day that most Americans submit their tax documents, Los Angele's tax dollars sentinel will be speaking to chamber members on the steps his office has taken to improve disclosures, communicate audit reports, and eliminate wasteful spending.

Since taking office in July of 2013, Controller Ron Galperin has taken steps to open up the city's books. Controller Galperin has implemented policies utilizing technology to give Los Angeles residents access to how city tax dollars are spent. From employee salaries, to department expenditures, and to special projects.

Our Business and Professional Development Lunch will be held at the Monterey at Encino at 16821 Burbank Blvd. in Encino.

We begin networking at 11:30 a.m., and the lunch ends at 1:00 p.m. The cost is
$25 for members with reservations and $35 for non-members and walk-ups. Call
the Chamber office to make your reservations at (818) 789-4711.

Did you know that for only $150 per year, you can advertise
in the "hot sheet" with your business card ad?  Please contact the
chamber office for details.

Where There is Smoke, There is Fire:
Protect the Seniors in Your Life

By Sandy Rosenholz, Senior Resources, Inc.

Fires can be devastating destroying treasured items, necessities and often lives. Escaping a fire is difficult enough when you are able bodied, but imagine being bed-ridden, having a hearing loss or other medical issues. More than 1200 Americans 65 and over die annually from a fire-related event, and more than 25% of all fire deaths and one-third of all residential fire death occur in this age group. The number of fire deaths increases as we age. Seniors 65 and older have nearly twice the national average for fire deaths. That number jumps to three times the national average for those age 75 and older and four times the national average for individuals 85+.
. Here are some more sobering statistics:
  • One fifth of individuals greater than 65 years of age that die in fires are bedridden or challenged by some other physical disability.
  • Two-thirds of older persons that died in fires were in the rooms where the fire originated.
  • While the leading cause of death in fire-related deaths for seniors is careless smoking, the leading cause of injuries is cooking related. Seniors also sustain injuries from scalds or burns due to space heater, fireplace, and wood stove malfunctions, as well as faulty wiring and overloaded outlets.

  • Be Prepared
As the Boy Scouts say: Always be prepared. You can prevent fire-related accidents with s ome s imple ea s y-to-follow tip s .
    While in the kitchen:
    • Never leave food unattended on the stove.
    • Use potholders, not towels,to handle hot pans and dishes.
    • Wear short or close-fitting sleeves and an apron to avoid catching clothes on fire.
    • Keep a pot lid close by to smother any pan fires.
    • Clean the stove and toaster regularly to avoid grease and crumb buildup.

www.ONEgeneration.org

Founded in 1978, ONEgeneration began as a modest and focused storefront senior center initiated, operated, and directed by visionary volunteers. As demographics changed and senior life-spans increased, ONEgeneration expanded and evolved to meet the continuum of our seniors' needs at dynamic senior enrichment centers, day health care center, and in their own homes.

A dramatic shift in our mission took place in 1994, when we added a child care program. This highlighted our commitment to intergenerational (adult daycare and childcare in a shared setting) services and programs that intertwine human needs for both giving and receiving in meaningful, daily contact. This philosophy has become our guiding value, as well as what is unique and most highly celebrated at ONEgeneration.

Keep your Child Safe During These Hot Summer Months

Prepared by the Office of Transportation Safety

Californians have already experienced sizzling temperatures and the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) is once again warning parents and caregivers that leaving children unattended in a parked car, even for short periods of time, can
lead to serious injury or death from hyperthermia, or heatstroke.
In an effort to keep hyperthermia and heatstroke at bay this summer, OTS is offering these safety tips parents and caregivers:
  • Look before you lock. Make it a habit to look in the backseat before rushing off to your destination. Either put something of the child's on the seat next to you or put something you will need next to the child as a visual reminder that your child is with you. If someone else is driving your child, or your daily routine has been changed, call or check to make sure your child has arrived safely.
  •  Never leave a child alone in a car. Understand the potential consequences of leaving your child unattended in a hot car, such as severe injury or death to the child, or being arrested. Be mindful that even if it is not that hot outside, it is almost always 20 degrees warmer, and potentially much more, inside the car.
  •  Take action if you notice a child unattended in a car. Don't wait for more than a few minutes for the driver to return. Remember, temperatures can rise fast inside a vehicle. The warning signs of heatstroke include: red, hot, and moist or dry skin; no sweating; a strong rapid pulse or a slow weak pulse; nausea; confusion; or acting strangely. If a child exhibits any of these signs after being in a hot vehicle, call 911 immediately. If water is available within reach, quickly spray the child with cool water or with a garden hose - NEVER an ice bath. Always stay with the child until help arrives.

It doesn't take much to lose a child to heatstroke. Children's bodies in particular overheat easily, and infants and children under four years old are at the greatest risk for heat-related illness. A car's internal temperature can quickly rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, even on days as cool as 60 degrees, and can rapidly reach fatal temperatures, increasing as much as 20 degrees in as little as 10 minutes, and up to 45 degrees in an hour.

Heatstroke tragedies are 100 percent preventable. The California Office of Traffic Safety wants everyone  to have a fun and, most importantly, safe summer. To learn more about summer safety or OTS efforts, visit www.ots.ca.gov/. Keep up to date by following OTS on Twitter at @OTS_Ca or by liking the Facebook page, www.facebook.com/CaliforniaOTS.
