Joseph Daniels is the last figure of the theatrical magic underground. For the past 5 years in Columbia, SC Joseph and his collaborators have been quietly operating The Dark Cabaret, a venue show in the capital city. While great pains were taken to keep the event off the radar of the magical community, the show has been attended by fans and celebrities from across the United States. It has transformed from an invitation only evening, into a theatrical phenomenon that requires reservations to avoid disappointment.

The staff include a top SC mentalist, palmist, a Georgia Wonder specialist, and of course, Christian Thee, a master Trompe-l'œil painter and Broadway scenic artist. Joseph is a lecturer, designer, published author, a film and stage actor, director, and stage combat expert. After over 25 years as a full time professional magician he now works for the publishers of Ripley's Believe It or Not! and Guinness World Records. His affiliation with them was kept secret when The Dark Cabaret applied for, and won a BION (Believe it or Not Award). This award had never been presented to any performer in the art of theatre or magic!

Most of the material in the show & lecture is original and hasn't been shared with anyone outside of Joseph's team. Though The Dark Cabaret has done some limited touring, this will be one of the few times he's ever lectured, or sold his original theatrical performance pieces.

In addition to his theories and creations (from illusions and mentalism, to comedy and sleight of hand) Joseph will provide ideas for approaching venue performances and share how collaboration and networking have the potential to make your show an ongoing success!

He will outline basic character development and share many of the advantages and pitfalls that can be embraced and avoided if you pay attention to a few key things and involve the right people. More importantly, as a 15 plus year member of Sleight Club, Joseph will outline the approach that has yielded so many award winning acts, lecturers, authors, & theatrical, television, and film consultants.

It's a lot to cover in a short period of time so this theatrical mystery crash course takes no prisoners!

PRESIDENT'S THOUGHTS
IBM stands for International Brotherhood of Magician's.  Brotherhood? What does that mean?

At its core it means we need to treat each other as brothers (or sisters). We must respect our fellow magicians as we would our own brother (or sister - enough, we're all brothers from now on even if we ARE in NC).

How?

I'm glad you asked. Using another's routine without permission, recording a performance or lecture without permission, openly speculating on a performance method, and freely exposing a commercial or privately shared effect are all examples of issues of which our club is suffering.

First, we shouldn't steal from a brother. If we see someone perform a routine we like, first of all be sure to tell them how much we like it. Then, if it is something we would like to do, ask their PERMISSION! Ask them if it is their original routine, if it is not, then ask if them to share their source. If they are reluctant to share it, drop it. No member or guest is under any obligation to hand us their hard work just because we ask. It is likely they spent a lot of time and effort researching it, looking at different variations, and working with different handlings. If they don't want to give us all of their work for nothing, respect and accept it.

If it is their original routine, then we may ask if they would be willing to share or sell it. Many times they will not. Please respect this. Watching a performance or demonstration does not imply permission to recreate and perform the act or a variation of it. Merely making surface changes, like replacing coins with poker chips, red backed cards with blue backed card, or a ring with a washer is NOT an ethical or original variation.

Most likely, what we will find is that the routine is their personal variation of someone else's sold or shared routine. If that is the case, your best bet is to track down the original, available routine for ourselves or find something else to work on. There are many themes and methods available to us. If we develop or adapt an effect or routine on our own, it is ours. Respecting the intellectual property rights of others will help protect our own.

Recording a member's or guest's performance or lecture without permission, at any time, is unethical. If we want to video a performance or lecture, whether on stage or during a session, we must first ask for permission. Recording without permission is another form of theft.

Openly speculating on another's performance methods with other magicians is just crude and disrespectful to the performer. If we want to know how something is done, or we think we have an idea, we should ask to discuss it, privately, with the performer. If they don't want to discuss it, they most likely have a sound reason. Just stop! Remember, a performance is not a license to copy or steal the creative work of another.

Finally, some methods (unfortunately) are better than the performance. It is very tempting to show off and reveal the method behind your latest purchase because it is cool. Stop! What you are doing is ripping off the intellectual rights of the effect's creator and taking away their ability to sell their work. That hurts them. It is unethical. When that happens enough they quit sharing their creations with our magic community and that hurts us all.

In summary, please stop and think about our group and individual behavior. There are several brilliant Magicians in the Triangle area that resist attending or performing at Ring 199 meetings. They've watched helplessly as members blatantly steal, and in many cases slaughter, their best routines. Our meetings are meant to inspire our creative talents, not provide a free resource for openly taking this work from others. We all suffer from this lack of trust and confidence in our brotherhood. We should be embarrassed by the behavior of these few and should endeavor to personally reinforce the ethics of our art and rebuild this delicate trust in our club.

JUNE 2016 RING REPORT
Ring 199's Friday magic luncheon meetings are facilitated by Danny Reeves. Mike Gorman performed a hilarious card routine wherein he used "too many cards" (5). By the end of the routine, only card was left and it wasn't even one of the cards he started out with! When the laughter subsided, Gorman performed a rope/ring/knot routine comprised of several different effects.

Rick DeNatale's coin manipulation was truly entertaining. In one routine, DeNatale caused a coin to vanish and repeatedly come back, and in another routine, a hole in one coin vanished and joined a hole in another coin.

Xan Innes stepped up to the (luncheon) plate and demonstrated his card skills to the glee of onlookers. In one routine, two cards kept trading places. In Innes' hilarious "Frog Trick", four frog cards kept turning into regular cards and back again. In the end, the four cards turned into a frog!

Danny Reeves performed "Perennial" from John Bannon's DVD "Move Zero." Kevin Reylek's so-called "Game of Chance" using six envelopes and a die seemingly would award a lucky participant the prize of a $100 bill. Not surprisingly, Reylek won the coveted prize. Reylek then performed a great version of "Brainwave". Mike DeSorbo performed a nice card routine called "Oil and Queens". DeSorbo demonstrated his prowess with a beautiful rendition of "Coins Across".

At the regular June 2016 meeting, Ring 199 was honored with the presence of members from "Oak City Locksport" club. The club members were taught the art of lock picking. Following up with the meeting's lock picking theme, Rick DeNatale's escape from padlocked chains was professionally executed. Amazingly, the chain's padlocks were provided by the lock picking club!

DeNatale kept spectators in stitches as he went through the motions of escaping from the chain while covered by a shroud and playing a harmonica!! Tony Baro's strait jacket escape was very "Houdinish"!

Upcoming Ring 199 events: July - lecture by David Trustman and Sarah Moseley. August - lecture by Joseph Daniels. October - lecture by Kendrick "Ice" McDonald.

Ring 199 normally meets on the first Saturday of the month. The exceptions for the remainder of 2016 will be July 9th, September 10th, and November 12th.

Hi, Everyone,

We had a pretty good size group this past Friday. In attendance were: Virginia Olmsted, Rick DeNatale, Mike & Pattie Gorman, Don Carrick, Kevin Reylek, Cal Horelick, Xan Innes and me. We engaged in some engaging magical discussions and saw some really great magic. Mike did a card effect in which some folks refer to as NFW. He then performed an invisible coin effect in which one coin became visible and kept multiplying, becoming first two coins and then three DIFFERENT coins. He then showed us an effect where he shows 3 stacks of cards which have been brought up to ten. By using the sum of the three stacks he was able to deal down to a PREDICTED card. Cal was able to do a card at ANY number effect which was done very nicely. He also performed an excellent coins across effect. Rick was able to demonstrate Six Degrees, a lá Kevin Bacon. Ken, Mike and Rick did an impromptu workshop on, and demonstrated quite an assortment of, broken and restored rubber bands. Xan was demonstrating some incredible card fans. We will meet at Cary's Crossroads Sweet Tomatoes on Friday afternoon of this week at 1:00.
