July 2016
Welcome Krystyna Karr

Please join us in welcoming Krystyna Karr, the newest member of Team RMHCCIN and the first person to lead our new program many efforts. For years the House has been providing excellent comfort and care to families who need us.  Now we can provide connections!  Krystyna will be working very closely with our families and connecting them with community resources they need.

Krystyna is a University of Indianapolis graduate and brings ample experience from organizations such as Ascension Health Ministry, State of Indiana Disabilities Services and New Directions of Decatur County. Krystyna also has extensive volunteer experience with several human service organizations including: Riley Hospital Child Life; Make-a-Wish; the Julian Center; St. Luke's United Methodist Church's outreach programs; and Conner Prairie. She also has program development knowledge which will be very helpful in leading us on this path of adding "connections" to our comfort and care.

In each month's newsletter, look for her new column "Krystyna's Korner" where you will learn about projects Krystyna is working on and ways you can help.

Krystyna's Korner

I am very excited to be working at the House with all of you!  As we work on introducing new programming, I would like to hear your ideas and suggestions on activities you feel could benefit the wellness of our guests. Right now, I am looking into family projects, kids' activities, arts/music, wellness support and outings! We are also looking to help houseguests navigate through community services they may be utilizing. Helping families develop a good plan to meet their needs and to assist with their overall health is the goal.

Please take a moment and share your thoughts about new programing by clicking on the link below to answer a five question survey.

If you are interested in helping with these new experiences, please contact Krystyna at [email protected] or at 317-267-0605, ext 210.

Congratulations 2016 Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana Scholarship Award Recipients!

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana recognizes the importance of continuing education and the expenses associated with obtaining a college degree.  To assist with college finances, RMHCCIN awarded 25 Central Indiana high school seniors each with a $5,000 scholarship.  The scholarship recipients were selected based on their academic achievements, community involvement and financial need.

One of these recipients is Aaliyah Coe who is a Guest Services Volunteer at the RMH at Riley on Wednesday afternoons.  Congratulations Aaliyah!

Volgistics and the VIC (Volunteer Information Center) Update

One of the nice features of using VIC is that volunteers can update or add missing information electronically.  Volunteers will be provided instructions on how to update the information we have on file.  This will give everyone an opportunity to notify us of any changes in your name or contact information.  We will also be asking you to provide updated emergency contact information and to let us know which of your many talents or skills you might be interested in donating to the House if the need arises.

Watch for these instructions coming to you by email or USPS if you haven't provided us with an email address.

Please contact Mary Friend at [email protected] or at (317) 267-0605, ext. 225 if you have any questions.

Operations Update - Limestone
  • Please remember that we only distribute one plastic parking pass per family.  Exceptions can be made by the manager on duty.
  • It is also important for all volunteers and staff to make sure your parking pass is hanging in your rearview mirror and that you are parked in a marked Ronald McDonald House parking space when parking in our lot.  We do not want anyone to receive a parking ticket.

RMHCCIN Develops New Partnership

The Ronald McDonald House at Riley Hospital recently formed a partnership with the Campus Kitchen at IUPUI.

The Campus Kitchen at IUPUI is the 37th Campus Kitchen and the first to open in the state of Indiana.  They operate out of the kitchen in the IUPUI Campus Center and initially recover food that would have otherwise gone to waste from IUPUI Food Services.  This food is then used to create nutritious meals for clients such as the RMH at Riley.  Since opening in September 2014, Assistant Director of the Office of Sustainability, Deborah Ferguson, and IUPUI Campus Kitchen Student Director, Rachael Gorham, have been coordinating with dining services, creating partnerships with other community organizations and recruiting excited volunteers.

The mission of the Campus Kitchen is to strengthen bodies by using existing resources to meet hunger and nutritional needs in our community as well fostering a new generation of community-minded adults through resourceful and mutually beneficial partnerships among students, social service agencies, businesses and schools.

Beginning this summer, the Campus Kitchen at IUPUI will provide one meal a week to the RMH in Riley with the goal of expanding to two meals a week by this fall.  We are thrilled with this new partnership and know our families benefit and appreciate the nutritious meals prepared and delivered by the Campus Kitchen at IUPUI.

Look Who Was Caught Rolling Out The Red Carpet

Cindy Hutchison recently caught Sarah Witwer, Guest Services Volunteer (GSV) at Limestone, demonstrating friendliness, compassion, cooperation, communication and teamwork.

Cindy wrote: "Sarah was recently working her shift when I noticed the second shift was not covered.  I asked Sarah if she would be able to work a double shift and on a moment's notice she said she could and was a great help."

Thank you, Sarah. You are appreciated!

Congratulations Sarah!  Your name was drawn this month in our Red Carpet Award drawing and your Crew Carwash pass is in the mail.
