Dear Friends,

June certainly has been a wild ride. June is a month of exams and finals; a month to prepare in excitement and make plans for the summer. It is a month to celebrate Father's Day, graduations, LGBTQ+ Pride, and so much more.

All of this made the Orlando shooting on June 12 all the more upsetting. Such a massive tragedy is bound to have profound effects on the Orlando community, the LGBTQ+ community, the Latinx community, and so many more.

It is times like these that it's most crucial to take care of each other. Gifted individuals like you and your family members are likely to feel this tragedy deeply, and by sticking together, we can support one another in healing.  The support of a community can truly help people heal, even at the darkest of times.  In everything we do at SENG, from our large Annual Conference to our smallest SENG Model Parent Group meeting, our greatest priority is to support each member of our community. Together, we are stronger.

We have many mediums of support that may be able to help at this time, including our list of mental health professionals, and the first three articles below in this newsletter.  Please know that you are not alone.  You have a community here at SENG, who understand the intensity of your emotions.

Re-imaging Florida and the Human Family, as we reshape a world that is worthy of our children...
by P. Susan Jackson

I am on my knees. I am not sure if it is in prayer or in total anguish. Another shooting in our sister-country to the South. Another tragedy too big to comprehend and loss of life so horrendous as to be truly unfathomable. I receive a text from my daughter; she is at a vigil downtown, a show of support for the victims, an assembly to demonstrate and to stand in cohesive community, to say "we are here". I sit quietly thinking, proud of her, glad that she stands tall, glad that she reaches out, but find myself thinking: what have we taught our children? More...

Affective Development of
Gifted Students with
Nontraditional Talents
by F. Richard Olenchak

Gifted underachievers, due to a cycle of disappointments, are placed at risk of self-doubt.

A continuing spiral of failure faces even those gifted youngsters who have experienced years of tremendous accomplishment prior to their under-achievement; negative feelings about self-worth, doubts about self-efficacy, and questions about identity exacerbate the deteriorating situation.  More...

F. Richard Olenchak is with the Center for Gifted and Talented at the University of Houston, Texas. He is especially interested in gifted students whose needs encompass secondary variables such as extreme ability and disabilities.
Gifted and Underachieving... The Twice Exceptional Learner
by Melissa Sornik, LMSW

Jason, age 19, breezed through school with little effort until his last two years of high school. Disorganized with poor handwriting and a divergent learning style, he failed to hand in completed work in Honors and AP classes and so compromised his grades.

Melissa Sornik, LMSW is the
co-founder and president of Twice Exceptional Children's Advocacy (TECA) and founder of the Exceptional Children & Families Network.
