PPE: Shaping HIM Professionals of our Future
by Connie Renda, MA, RHIA, CHDA and Janet Daley-Janus, RHIA
The Professional Practice Experience (PPE) is a college-based course for credit that Health Information Management (HIM) students in accredited HIM programs take as part of their graduation requirement. The purpose of the PPE is for students to gain hands-on experience at a HIM site and blend theory with practice in a real world setting.
Educators worry about lack of PPE sites; HIM directors worry it will take too much time, and students worry they will not be able to acquire the hands-on experience required in most job postings. Fret no more! Everyone can be successful in this endeavor to lead the incoming HIM professionals confidently into the future.
