Summer is here and Heartland's people programs are in full bloom!
Now Registering for Heartland's Natural History Course!
Join Heartland's resident plant pathologist, Dr. Doug Maxwell, and his granddaughters on a journey through the natural world at Heartland Farm Sanctuary! Students will learn how our unique land in the Driftless Region, which includes 40 acres of forest and restored prairie, evolved over hundreds of millions of years. Students will collect a wide variety of plants to practice the basics of plant identification and will also learn to identify the wild birds at Heartland. No previous experience in plant identification is necessary but a willingness to to learn is critical. A sketchbook and colored pencils are required. Animal Hearts:
Some who find sanctuary at Heartland are farm animals, others are people. We just finished our Animal Hearts Youth Group, a weekly support program for kids who have experienced trauma and loss. Each week the kids came together to spend time exploring and finding quiet time in nature as well as bonding with each other and their favorite animals in our barn and pastures. As with everyone who visits Heartland, we are proud to say the kids left feeling better than when they came.

Heartland's Summer Camp:
June 13th marked the
beginning of Heartland Summer Camp season! For 11 weeks, Heartland will host summer campers for up close and personal interaction with our friendly farm animals, barn chores, and activities centered around building our 3 C's: Character, Confidence and Compassion. The campers are also keeping busy with crafts, pasture games, and tie-dyeing their Summer Camp t-shirts!

We're on the search for a 'Gator' (or tractor)! Can you help?
No it's not our latest animal rescue, but Heartland is looking for a Gator-type utility vehicle or tractor to use around the farm! Either type of vehicle would be a huge help to our barn staff and volunteers: We'll be able to easily get water out to our growing pasture space, plow snow in the winter, mow our
pastures, dig holes for fence
posts...the possibilities are
 endless!

Visit us at Mounds and support Heartland's animals in a fun way!
This month we are giving thanks to our friends at
Mounds Pet Food Warehouse. Mounds allows us to set up shop at their store locations multiple times a month to hold our animal feed and supply drives! We are so thankful for a partnership with such a generous and kind local business. While you're out shopping for your furry family member, stop by to say hello and consider purchasing a bag of feed for your favorite Heartland friend.

June Volunteer of the Month:
Chelsea Statz
Meet our fabulous June Volunteer of the Month, Chelsea! Chelsea's only been volunteering with Heartland for a short while, but she's jumped in with both feet. Chelsea is a regular animal care volunteer, helps out with leading public and private tours, and volunteers at Heartland tabling events in the community. We love her enthusiasm and her dedication to the animals. Thank you, Chelsea!

Thank you, Bob!
Bob Walker is Heartland's Volunteer Project Coordinator and all-around carpenter, handy man, and Mr. Fix It! Bob works as a Manufacturing Engineer for a global company based in Madison, and comes with extensive project management skills. While his professional experience is in the industrial manufacturing world, his passion is helping save and maintain old buildings, structures, and barns. Bob's knowledge of construction principals, and his love of animals (Mister the Goose is a BIG FAN of Bob's!) make him an absolutely crucial part of the Heartland team.

Animal Spotlight: Thor the Llama
Thor was brought to the Heartland barn in 2011 with his brother, Mick, after their previous owner was forced to leave her farm. Thor & Mick are quite the characters and take their job of protecting the Heartland pastures very seriously. Thor is a gentle, curious guy who loves to take naps in the fun (fully stretched out!)

Love working with animals?
Heartland is looking for animal care volunteers who are available to work our evening barn shifts (4:30-7:30 PM weekdays, 4-7 PM weekends). Tasks include feeding and watering animals, cleaning stalls, sweeping floors, doing dishes, preparing produce for our animals, and more!
