Leadership Boca Raton Toured FAU Simulation Center
On June 1st, 40 members of the 2016 class of Leadership Boca Raton, Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, visi
ted the FAU Simulation Center as part of their Education Day. Mark Goldstein Senior Director of the Simulation Center, Dr. George Luck, Director of Professional Education, David Sandau, Program Manager of the Simulation Center, Whitney Winslow and Donell Henry gave them quick look at what our students experience and learn at the Simulation Center.
Leadership Boca participants will become a part of a growing network of community and business leaders with whom they will interact for the remainder of their careers. Perhaps the most important benefit is that Leadership Boca graduates have the opportunity to return to the community some of what the community has given to them. We hope that they go out into the community a spread the word about the great work we are doing at the Simulation Center to educate our medical students and medical professionals.
The Florida Atlantic University Simulation Center (FAUSC) applies sophisticated simulation and trainer technologies to educate new physicians, residents, medical students, nurses and first responders. The literature suggests, and we have observed, that participants will learn faster, become familiar with advanced technology and become more self-assured in their skills while under the supervision of trained instructors.

Geriatric Clerkship Begins
The Geriatrics Inpatient Teaching Service for the third year Geri/Pal Clerkship, led by Mandi Sehgal, M.D., began last week at Memorial West.

Blood Drive and Vigil Held for Orlando Vicitims
The
College of Medicine hosted a Blood Drive and Vigil
for Orlando Victims on Thursday, June 16.
More than 50 people came to donate blood, helping save150 lives. The college also hosted a vigil, where staff who attended from across the campus expressed great appreciation for the opportunity to remember those affected by the shooting.

h.D., Nirmala Prakash, Ph.D., Assistant Director for Diversity and Inclusion, and Milor Perdomo spoke at the event. Balloons were released to honor each victim.
The vigil was followed by a "Real Talks" session with more than 160 individuals including members of the LGBT and Muslim communities. Attendees had the opportunity to discuss what impact the tragedy had on them and their communities. It was moderated by counselors from Counseling and Psychological Services. People from all of these groups came together, sharing resources and ideas for personal and community support.

As the end of FY16 draws near and the University has a year of Workday under its belt, we will be proposing a change to the existing Pcard policy. After listening to user input on what we can do to be more responsive to needs, we will be revising the Pcard Policy effective July 1, 2016 to address the following issues.
Specifically, we are told that Cardholders are having a difficult time meeting the 10 business day deadline. In response to your concerns, the transactions processes of (1) collecting receipts, (2) creating an expense report and (3) obtaining appropriate approvals, the new Pcard policy will extend the timeframefrom the current 10 business day timeframe to 30 calendar days to complete these transactions. This should allow for plenty of time to meet audit requirements on document submissions and approvals for all travelers and Pcard transactions.

The following addresses not only the 10 business day to 30 calendar day change, but also other policy changes such as the compliance strategy, escalation path, penalties and cutoff dates. I think you will find the new process to be less burdensome and easier to follow, resulting in internal and external audits that will show better conformity to our policies. We hope this will provide a more realistic timeframe to process these transactions overall.

M4 Student Receives Florida Board of Medicine
M4 Student, Janelle Nissam, received the Florida Borad of Medicine Recognition Award this June.
College of Medicine Faculty Complete Harvard Macy Program
Dr. Lizotte Waniewski and Dr. Gundersen successfully completed the 2016-2017 Harvard Macy Program for Educators in the Health Professions as scholars. Dr. Lizotte-Waniewski's project was titled "Identifying Medical Students "At Risk" for Poor Academic Performance in Basic Science Courses."

hopeful that with early intervention we will see fewer students struggle beyond the first year and position them to do well in their coursework
and on the Step exams moving forward. Dr. Gundersen's project was titled "Perceptions of Professionalism in Medical Schoo
l Students and Faculty."
The goal is to optimize students' professional identity formation within our curriculum. Dr. Sarah Wood and Dr. Stuart Goldman both served as faculty for the Harvard course this year.
Emily Zemach, Begins as Director of Medical Education
Her last day at the College of Medicine was June 15. She is taking a new position as director of medical education at Memorial Regional Hospital. She will be greatly missed but we are glad she will be working with our medical students down there!
Study Published in Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics
Congratulations to College of Medicine researchers Xupei Huang, M.D., Ph.D, Wen Shen, Ph.D., and Changlong Nan, Ph.D., had a study published in Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics.
The study was on diastolic dysfunction in aging hearts, which is matched with one of the FAU research pillars, studies on aging.
Congratulations to College of Medicine researchers Xupei Huang, M.D., Ph.D, Wen Shen, Ph.D., and Changlong Nan, Ph.D., had a study published in Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

Affiliate Professor's Study Published
Florida Atlantic University Affiliate Professor Seth J Baum, M.D., recently published a study in
Lancet on familial hypercholesterolaemia.
Medical Student's Paper Accepted
Rishabh Jethanandani's study titled,
"Elevated Body Mass Index is Associated with Early Total Knee Revision for Infection" was accepted by the Journal of Arthroplasty.
