A Message from the Dean...
Independence Day
Q: Do the English have the Fourth of July in Britain?
A: Yes, every year. (They don't celebrate Independence Day, however. That is an American holiday.)

I love our country. On Independence Day weekend we place several American flags outside our house. I listen to patriotic music.

I do so, however, with a bit of mixed emotions. I realize that the economic  benefits that I and my family enjoy are not shared to the same extent by 75% of our fellow citizens. My income is higher than 99.92% of the people throughout the world.  There are only about 5 million people in the world richer than I am.

Note to others: I do not feel rich. We don't eat out hardly at all. My car is ten years old with almost 180,000 miles. My shoes are over six years old (I take very good care of them.)  When we went to a restaurant for Father's Day, I chose Zoes. $15 for a bottle of wine is a splurge.

Last year we gave 15% or our income to charities.  We help support four           missionaries-five, if you count that two of them are our son and daughter-in-law.

Regardless of the three previous paragraphs, I don't feel guilt that I am so much more well-off than the vast majority of the people of the world. Years ago I read "What do you say to a Hungry World" in which the then president of World Vision was asked how he could celebrate Thanksgiving with so many hungry people in the world. He replied that Satan would have us feel guilty so we would not be thankful. And we must always be thankful.

My mixed emotions come from the official name for this day: Independence Day-because we are none of us independent from others. As John Donne so eloquently wrote: "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main."

We give out of gratitude. We give generously because we recognize that we are not independent. What does your charitable giving say about your independence? About your gratefulness?
