Rabbi's Message
Independence Day...2016
Music is a big part of the celebrations we have in America. On special holidays we always have music, both secular and sacred. As we celebrate our independence on the Fourth of July, music is a vital part of collective pride. Lee Greenwood wrote a song in 1984 during the presidential campaign. I get chills every time I hear it. ''I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me. And I'll gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today. 'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land. God bless the USA.''
The wonderful Kate Smith introduced a song that became something of a national song for Americans during the celebration of the Fourth of July. In those crystal clear as a bell tones, she sang, ''God Bless America." Written in 1938 by the iconic Jewish composer, Irving Berlin, it is considered to be our second National Anthem.
We naturally think of our national freedom on July 4th. And, we should. That's the great legacy of our founding fathers. We live in a land blessed with freedom. Few nations have ever known such liberties. We are free to gather in worship. No government official tells when, or how, or what to worship. We can speak our minds. A free press keeps us informed about our world. We choose where we live and what we do to make a living. We select our own leaders from dogcatcher to president. Many people around the world only dream of such privileges.
We celebrate July 4th because on that day our nation's founders signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Many call it our country's Birth Certificate. Our current president wishes he had an American birth certificate.
If there is anything we need it is to put God back in our schoolhouses, courthouses, government and our public and national life. It would be a great and glorious day if God were put back in the USA. I could care less about what is politically correct. We should concern ourselves about being Biblically correct. I really don't take anything our politicians have to say seriously. To me, it's idle rhetoric and full of vacant promises and blatant lies. It is the words that are attributed to God that should be first and foremost.
God bless America and each and every one of us.
Peace and Love everybody.
Rabbi Jake

Arne's Corner
This past weekend I watched the rabble screaming and taunting in the streets outside a Trump event. Where I saw several Mexican flags, one idiot wearing an American flag wrapped around his head a la Yasser Arafat bellowing obscenities.
LOTS of repetitious chanting, cursing and even worse - physical abuse of Trump attendees. But NOTHING that was pro-USA.
Inside the Trump event, we saw and heard proud Americans deliver the Pledge of Allegiance, sing the National Anthem, wave U.S, flags and chant USA, USA, USA.
Are we or are we not a nation of laws? Do we not respect the rights of others? The right to assemble peacefully? As you know, the First Amendment gives us that right.
So I need to ask, what part of ILLEGAL is it we don't comprehend?

High Holidays
The High Holidays begin at sundown on Sunday, October 2. We are very excited that our Cantor will once again be the multi-talented, Mike Burstyn. Services will be held at the Beverly Vista School which is located between S. Elm and S. Rexford and Charleville and Gregory Way. The entrance to the auditorium is on the corner of S. Rexford and Gregory Way. It's a very nice auditorium, but holds only 475 seats, so you must order your seats and any extra seats early to ensure a seat for the Holidays. Please consider joining us for this very beautiful service. Fill out the Seat Reservation Form and return it to us ASAP so that we can accommodate you. We're looking forward to experiencing another year of uplifting and spiritual services with you,

Tashlich
is a ritual that many Jews observe during Rosh HaShanah. "
Tashlich
" means "casting off" in Hebrew and involves symbolically casting off the sins of the previous year by tossing pieces of bread or another food into a body of flowing water.
If you haven't joined us in the past, you must do so this year on the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah. Our Tashlich service led by Rabbi Jerry and Cantor Michael Burstyn is very special, heimish and spiritual.
Download the flyer, fill it out and return with your remittance if you are joining us for brunch.
