We started the evening the reciting of the Kiddush by Rabbi Herb Freed, one of my closest and wisest friends who, although he will deny it, is one of the saintly 36 righteous people each generation who are deemed responsible for the saving of the world. His spoken sing-song reciting of this sacred prayer to every night Shabbat meal was especially effective this warm and congenial evening. Following Herb, one of our recent converts, Ashley Cornell, blessed the candles restraining her powerful soprano voice emphasizing the sanctity of this evening as we thought about our brave Israeli soldiers, hoping that the time will soon come when they, like us, will be able to sit around a Shabbat table in peace and prayer without fear of an enemy missile killing us and our families.
Following the main course, Rabbi Freed stood up and spoke about the strength, chazak, of our people throughout the centuries as we endure and survive and live to face other misguided attempts to defeat us. It is our strength, our cunning, our brilliance, our dedication, our destiny to survive and continue to be the only voice of conscience in a tumultuous world. May we all be blessed to be given the strength to attend this years Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services and together, pray for an end to Greed, Hunger and War. Amen. Am Yisroel Chai!................Long Live Israel!

Arne's Corner
You remember the Lethal Weapon series of films that starred the anti-Semitic Mel Gibson? Well, guess what, his co-star Danny Glover is a vocal figure in the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement against Israel. Glover has voiced his support for a cultural and academic boycott of Israel before. In 2009, he joined with others to object to a focus on Israeli films at the Toronto International Film Festival. Like two peas in a pod, those two.
I have a personal experience with Danny Glover (a few years back) so I knew he isn't Mr. Nice Guy. But I didn't know he qualified to be like his co-star, another "mumser."
Israel to the rescue..........One out of three Americans over the age of 65 will fall, and for those over the age of 80, these risks increase dramatically and often result in hospitalization, painful surgeries and sometimes decreased life expectancy. To help prevent the loss of balance among the elderly that leads to dangerous falls, Israeli biomedical engineer Yonatan Manor developed "B-Shoe" technology.
Studying precisely how stability decreases with age as muscles deteriorate and reflexes slow, Manor installed a miniature sensor-driven motorized mechanism in the heel of a shoe to gently glide the shoe backwards to correct imbalance.
While wearing the shoe, the wearer cannot sense or "feel" the adjustment. The "B-Shoe" has been tested and granted patents both in the U.S. and Israel. It should be on the market within two years.
I'm reserving a size 9, any color.

Remember when Debbie Reynolds starred in "Tammy" and sang, "I hear the cottonwoods whispering above, Tammy, Tammy, Tammy's in love?" Well, I saw "Tammy" starring Melissa McCarthy and it has none of the humor, sweetness and innocence of Ms. Reynolds' version nor is there meant to be any correlation. What Ms. McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone, who directed and co-wrote, have accomplished is to besmirch the name Tammy. There ought to be a law. If that were the only offense it could have passed as a misstep by, arguably, one of the funniest and most bawdy women on the planet. 'What we have here is a failure to communicate' what funny should be. And, while the casting of Susan Sarandon, Allison Janney, Dan Aykroyd, Kathy Bates, Sandra Oh and Toni Collette might have been an inspired choice, it has failed miserably. For starters, the still sensual and beautiful Sarandon just isn't believable as her grandmother. The rest of the cast fall into the same mold except for Ms. Bates who is wonderful as her lesbian cousin.
There is no getting away from McCarthy's immense acting talent but there is much to be desired from her writing. Dare I mention that Will Ferrell is listed as a producer?

LUCY If ever a film was tailor made for a 3D presentation, it is "Lucy" written and directed by Luc Besson and starring Scarlett Johansonn and Morgan Freeman. Unfortunately, it wasn't made in 3D, hence the disappointment. Besson's contention (for the film) is that we utilize only 10% of our brain's capacity appears to be fallacious. We actually use 100%. However, seeing the utter destruction and wanton killing of human beings throughout the world, one would think that our leaders are using a total of 10% to govern our universe...if that! In Besson's screenplay, Johansonn, while in a coma has a potent drug put into her system by ruthless gangsters and eventually exploding into myriads of dangerous molecules enabling her use an increasing percentage of her brainpower as the film unbelievably goes from one absurdity to another. The demure actress is now able to psychedelically outmaneuver, outshoot and outsmart the sinister forces that originally placed the drugs in her. It's during those moments that the multi-colored special 3D effects, if used, would have brought more visual enjoyment to the screen. Lucy: 2 bagels out of 4 MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT A brilliant Chinese magician, Wei Ling Soo, is one of the world's best illusionists. In private life he is, Stanley Crawford (Colin Firth), a somber, pompous, argumentative Englishman. He is told of a clairvoyant (Emma Stone) who is not only beautiful but possesses incredible psychic powers. Being and illusionist himself, Crawford doesn't believe in clairvoyants and bets his friend that he will unmask her as a charlatan preying on the hopes and beliefs of susceptible old and wealthy people. I loved the premise and enjoyed the movie. Was it as funny as other of Woody Allen movies? No. Was it enjoyable? For this reviewer.... a resounding, yes. Mr. Allen has written, once again, a terrific story enhanced by his brilliant dialogue. Not every film has to be filled with 'haha' moments. I think outstanding dialogue and its brilliant delivery by Mr. Firth, one of cinema's great actors, is far more enjoyable than the inane words being spoken in most of today's films. The script moves seamlessly and although Firth and Stone are not perfectly paired as possible lovers, the story, set in the 20's, perfectly catches the mood and reflections of a bygone era. The Surprising Duo Behind the Hamas Missile Map
A Belgian-Israeli Jew and a Dutch Muslim developed Israel Under Attack, a new computer tool for mapping rocket trajectories from Gaza.
by Ruthie Blum, Israel21c
A new computer tool showing the trajectory of Hamas rockets fired at Israel from Gaza is not only getting traction on social media, but constitutes an example of Jewish-Arab public diplomacy coexistence in action.
The brainchild of 18-year-old Samuel Lespes Cardillo and 22-year-old Farid el-Nasire, the program -"Israel Under Attack" - is a map of incoming red alerts, showing both their target in Israel and their point of origin.
Cardillo is a Jew from Belgium who immigrated to Israel six months ago. El-Nasire is a pro-Israel Muslim from the Netherlands, whose family is originally from Morocco. The two met on Facebook, in a group called Innovation Israel, a mere week before launching the tool on the morning of July 20.
Realizing through chats that they shared a similar idea for faster and more precise Red Alerts, they collaborated via Skype and phone between Hoorn and Herzliya, spending what Cardillo described to ISRAEL21c as "many white nights" to get the tool ready and up and running as quickly as possible for the safety of the Israeli public.
Unlike the Red Alert audio app for smartphones, which shows the area a rocket or missile is headed and warns the residents of that area to take cover in a shelter or safe room, Israel Under Attack enables users to visualize the process, from launch to interception or hit. It also indicates, with a digital clock, how many hours, minutes and seconds it has been "since Israel was targeted by Hamas rockets." When there is an actual alert, it makes a deep and startling twanging sound.
It's not rocket science
It all began a few days ago, when el-Nasire asked the Facebook group where he could get the Red Alert information; simultaneously, Cardillo posed the same question. Another member of the group responded by posting a link to the Home Front Command (Pikud HaOref) site.
"That's when we started building our site," el-Nasire, a computer programmer at the Amsterdam Web Agency, told ISRAEL21c via Skype from Holland. "And we did it by receiving the area codes of the places where sirens go off, and then calculating the latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates, and how much time it takes a rocket to arrive at its destination."
El-Nasire said that it was "actually quite simple; just a matter of math." He then quipped: "It's not rocket science ... so to speak."
Cardillo, who works for plugNup (a Belgian-Israeli high-tech startup) told ISRAEL21c that in spite of the relative accuracy of the trajectories on the map, "We do not show the exact location of rocket-landings, for security reasons."
After all, he pointed out, "The purpose of the endeavor is to help Israel."
El-Nasire agreed, admitting that it was unusual for someone of his background, both Muslim and European, to be embarking on a campaign to help the Jewish state's public diplomacy efforts by showing the world that it is Israel under attack by Hamas and not the other way around.
"If you had told me when I was 10 years old that I would end up with Jewish and Israeli friends, visit Israel and undertake this project, I wouldn't have believed you; I would have laughed at you; or I would have gotten really angry," he said. "Because before I got to know Jews and Israelis, I only knew about them what I saw on TV; and it wasn't pretty. It is easy to hate people, when all you see is the demonization."
His perception changed when he began to meet Israeli tourists in Holland.
"I came to realize that if you don't throw rocks at them, Israelis are pretty nice people," he laughed. "But even if I hadn't gotten to know them, all I would have had to do is watch how Hamas behaves - launching rockets and breaching ceasefires - and then I would have understood."
Someone else who understood the significance of Israel Under Attack as soon as he was approached was Mason Crollie, a British non-Jew, from whom Cardillo and el-Nasire wanted to purchase a server for their program. But Crollie was so thrilled with their innovation and its aim of helping Israel during wartime that he offered his services free of charge.
Meanwhile, the authors of Israel Under Attack are continuing to work together through sleepless nights to develop an app out of their map.
