Summer time in Walworth County is a time of blissfulness... friends, family, memorable moments of beach, picnics, and festivals. I personally feel so grateful to be able to experience all this... however there are days I just cannot seem to lift the heartache we feel for the people we meet at Open Arms Free Clinic. Just this week "Bob", a 38 year old man, came to us after experiencing a major heart attack and was told at discharge to follow up with his primary doctor. His 10mo old daughter and wife have health insurance. He tried to save the money by not getting covered himself, and now he didn't have a primary care doctor. With the expenses of two emergency visits and inpatient stays, the small savings he thought he had have disappeared. We also saw "Mary", 42 year old woman with severe abdominal pain... she has tried everything and now cannot even work due to the pain. The volunteer providers at OAFC graciously met with folks like Bob and Mary, and hundreds of our Walworth County friends and family in greatest need and provided treatment, medicine, and most importantly, compassion.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has succeeded in providing millions of Americans with access to health insurance. However, many in Walworth County remain without coverage or access to a doctor. Recent estimates from University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute put that number at 8% uninsured for the state, that equals to close to
8,000 Walworth County residents remain uninsured.
For these residents, Open Arms Free Clinic is a lifesaver. The vast majority of our patients are hard-working people with very low-wage jobs, struggling to make ends meet. Some are recently unemployed. Others have new jobs that make them ineligible for Medicaid - but they don't have enough saved to cover deductibles.
We are their safety net. There are over 70 independent, locally-run free and charitable clinics in Wisconsin
. Since our doors opened in November 2012, over
2,000 patients have enrolled into our care. In the span of one year,
800 patients, with 2500 patient visits, received services at
O
pen Arms Free Clinic.
The most amazing part? Over
9,000 hours of service
were provided by volunteer physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals
. We are grateful to have community and service minded providers on our team.
We do not receive county, state or federal funding to provide services. Instead,
we rely on donations - both monetary and in volunteer hours - to stay open.
Whether for a short time or for long term care, OAFC has been a
vital access point
in the community for vulnerable populations by connecting those in need with those who can help. Thank you for supporting the efforts of Open Arms Free Clinic. Our gratitude echoes from our patients too....
FOR ONLY $10 A MONTH, YOU COULD PROVIDE $1,200 WORTH OF LIFE-SAVING MEDICATION FOR A PATIENT THIS YEAR!
Donations made by mail may be addressed to:
Open Arms Free Clinic, PO Box 678, Elkhorn, WI 53121.
Thank you in advance for believing in our mission. We appreciate you!
As the organization has grown to allow for more services, it is important to build a strong foundation to support the volunteers and patients so that all who are involved with Open Arms Free Clinic has a pleasant experience. OAFC relies on the hundreds of talented volunteers and financial donations to ensure patients receive high quality health care services, medicine, labs, and advocacy services. Currently, one paid job position has been approved by the OAFC Board of directors to assist the Executive Director in maintaining the strong foundation of donated professional services.
