John Mangum & Todd Smith Join Arts Orange County Board

At its meeting on June 22, the Arts Orange County Board elected two new Board members:
John Mangum is the President and Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. Mangum has held several senior artistic planning roles at major American orchestras. Most recently, he served as Director of Artistic Planning at the San Francisco Symphony, where he worked with Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas to shape the Symphony's overall artistic profile through the selection of repertoire, projects, and artistic collaborators. Prior to San Francisco, Mangum worked as Artistic Administrator for the New York Philharmonic and as Vice President for Artistic Planning at The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He started his career at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he worked as the staff program annotator and later as Artistic Administrator, developing the Orchestra's programs at the Hollywood Bowl as well as a variety of concerts and projects at Walt Disney Concert Hall. As a freelance writer, Mangum has written notes and articles for a variety of record labels, orchestras, presenters, and festivals, most recently as an annual contributor to the program books of the Salzburg Festival. He holds a Ph.D. in history with a field in musicology, in addition to master's and bachelor's degrees in history, all from the University of California, Los Angeles. His scholarly work looks at the intersection of music and power in 18th-century German-speaking Central Europe. Mangum was appointed to the Philharmonic Society post in 2014.
Todd DeShields Smith is the CEO and Director of the Orange County Museum of Art. Previously, he served as Executive Director of Florida's Tampa Museum of Art for six years. During his tenure there, he oversaw the final stages of building the museum's new home alongside Tampa's Riverwalk. He also helped grow the institution's exhibition budget, expand its membership programming and cultivate new supporters. "Degas: Form, Movement and the Antique" and "No Limits: Janet Biggs," both 2011, and "My Generation: Young Chinese Artists," in 2014, are among his notable exhibitions there. Prior to his directorial post in Tampa, Smith served as director of the Gibbs Museum of Art in Charleston, S.C., and the Knoxville Museum of Art in Tennessee, and was CEO of the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, N.D. He has held curatorial positions with the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, N.C., Ohio's Dayton Art Institute and the Kinsey Institute in Bloomington, Ind. He was a Ph.D. candidate in art history at Indiana University, where he earned his M.A., and received his B.A. from Duke University in art history and political science. Smith was appointed to the Orange County Museum of Art post in 2014.

OC Register Pledges Continued Classical Music and Arts Coverage
|

Upon learning that longtime classical music writer and critic Tim Mangan had been laid off from the Orange County Register, Arts Orange County and many others in the community wrote to the Register's new leaders, Frank Pine, Executive Editor and Ron Hasse, Publisher, expressing shock over the decision and dismay for the impact it will have on arts and classical music coverage.
Pine responded to ArtsOC Executive Director Rick Stein by inviting him to meet. During yesterday's meeting, Stein provided an overview of Orange County's arts community as well as a history of the Register's coverage of arts and culture. Pine told him that the Register's longtime theatre and dance writer Paul Hodgins would be adding classical music to his coverage (Hodgins holds a doctorate in music and is also a composer), and that more coverage would be devoted to advance preview articles which he said are more useful to readers and to arts presenters alike.
After learning from Stein about special season preview supplements the Register had produced in the past, Pine offered to explore restarting that tradition in the fall of 2016.
"I was glad to learn that the new leadership of the Register intends to continue providing robust coverage of the arts," says Stein. "Of course, ArtsOC will continue to monitor how well they live up to that commitment and remind them of it if we feel they are falling short."
