Georgia Right to Life Mourns

the Supreme Court Ruling

The Supreme Court of the United States' ruling in favor of abortion placed more women in danger if they choose to have an abortion. There is no reason to celebrate placing politics above women's safety.
Some history on this case...
In 2014 a case was brought by abortion providers in Texas against an omnibus abortion bill that had been passed in that state in 2013.

The 2013 bill (HB2) required that abortion mills maintain facility standards similar to small hospitals, and mandated that abortion providers be in close proximity to an ambulatory facility. Proponents of the abortion bill argue that they are protecting women's health.

The case, Whole Women's Health v. Hellerstedt, had been heard in the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled to uphold the two anti-abortion provisions.  The Supreme Court's obligation was to clarify at what point a restriction on abortions becomes a significant burden on a woman's access to the procedure.

The 1992 Supreme Court decision Casey v. Planned Parenthood is foundational to this ruling, as it set the legal standard for the constitutionality of abortion restrictions, especially with respect to the burdens a restriction imposes on abortion access versus the benefits of the restriction.

What does this mean for Georgia and other states?

Whether surgical or medical, abortion is dangerous to a woman's health both physically and psychologically.  There are certain criteria and regulations that clinics of all kinds must meet and adhere to in order to stay open for business - veterinaries, tattoo salons, etc.

It is widely known that many abortion facilities lack the minimum physical requirements to guarantee that basic health and safety standards are met. Abortion mills that expose patients to unsanitary and dangerous conditions are uncovered on a regular basis. Who would oppose appropriate regulation of the abortion industry? Politicians and judges supported by their pro-choice constituencies; and abortion industry executives and abortion center owners who prosper when their businesses go unregulated.

Women in Georgia and across the country should be concerned that politicians and judges are willing to sacrifice their safety in order to promote a political agenda.

Georgia Right to Life
opposes all abortions, but as long as the practice is legal it should meet the highest medical standards - women deserve nothing less.

Georgia Right to Life may be discouraged today, but we'll keep fighting for women, for babies, and for the sanctity of all innocent human life. The best way to accomplish that is to support  Personhood - the paramount right to life.

Take action today to protect birth mothers and pre-born babies from victimization by unprincipled politicians and the abortion industry.

Support the work of Georgia Right to Life as we promote pro-life education, political action and legislation here in Georgia.
