Back to School Water Park Bash Gives Back to Local Veterans

Celebrate the end of summer while helping a worthy cause and join Operation Stand Down: No Veteran Left Behind at this year's back to school bash at Point Mallard Park in Decatur.

We will be collecting donations such as personal care items, toiletries, underwear, socks, t-shirts, and nonperishable foods to go to Operation Stand Down: No Veteran Left Behind. According to local officials, it is estimated there are nearly 1,000 homeless people in North Alabama and approximately 30% of these being homeless or displaced veterans. Operation Stand Down: No Veteran Left Behind believes that no veteran should be homeless; No veteran who wants to work should be jobless; No veteran should feel hopeless; and No veteran will be left behind.

GSNCA Property Update

Camp Tombigbee
The board of directors has accepted a bid for the sale of Camp Tombigbee, and the sale was finalized on Friday, June 17. Cash proceeds from the sale will be deposited into the council's short term investments. The board's property task group will conduct their annual camp inspections and form a list of high priority health and safety items. The cash from the sale of Tombigbee will be used to address these issues and make our camps safer, cleaner and more effective for our girls.

Camp Cottaquilla
The timber management plan at the Camp Cottaquilla property has been finalized and cutting will begin in July. The camp will remain rested until the trees have been removed from the two approved clear cut sections. A work schedule to conduct repairs on the volunteer center at Camp Cottaquilla is being developed. A slightly used Gator has been purchased for use by staff and volunteers to access areas of the camp that have been storm damaged so that repairs can be made. Once the camp reopens, the Gator will help to transport girls into camp.

Kanawahala Program Center
Low and high ropes are good to go for summer camp! Repairs have been made and new safety equipment has been purchased. We'll begin welcoming girls to summer resident camp next week.

Camp Trico
New field lines have been installed at the Dogwood and Hillwood units, making the camp more functional and sanitary.
