From The Building & Grounds Committee

Almost ten weeks ago, at the end of pollen season, contractors began work at Saint  Paul's, first washing all the buildings: the columns, porticos, pediments, and entablatures of the church itself, the breezeway to Tyler Hall and all the Tyler Hall woodwork, including the windows. With a thorough cleaning, the porches and woodwork of the church building are bright shining as the sun; do please notice.
Painting began shortly thereafter on the breezeway and the woodwork of Tyler Hall, that work now recently concluded. Early in 2017, the windows of Tyler Hall will be re-glazed and the painting of that building will be complete. At the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the Buildings and Grounds committee scheduled the work to fall within two budget years; additionally all the work has been planned so that workers with ladders, scaffolds, and lifts have worked on weekdays and have avoided large scheduled events such as Tuesday Music.

Soon Fred Franklin Associates, a steeplejack contractor from the Atlanta area, will begin
work on the bell tower. A shoring up of the tower, repairing damage from heat, cold, rain, and pigeons , is scheduled roughly every 10-12 years. Franklin's company re-worked the tower a little more than ten years ago for $65,000, and this year's work is estimated to be at or near that amount: some elements of the bid are up, others down. This year's project has been funded by Creel-Harison Foundation grants -- one received last fiscal year and another this year. St. Paul's is fortunate to have this gracious benefactor and a treasurer who is successful in grant-writing. Pictures will follow once the bell tower work begins .

2016 LANSING LEE CONFERENCE
October 16 - October 18
Kanuga

The Lansing Lee Conference, named in honor of Lansing B. Lee, Jr., a longtime parishioner of Saint Paul's Church, offers an opportunity to gather in the mountains of North Carolina during the most beautiful time of the year to learn, be inspired and enjoy all that Kanuga has to offer. I hope you will consider attending this year's conference with others from Saint Paul's Church and from throughout the country.

On September 24, 2015, led by Pope Francis, the United States Congress applauded the Golden Rule. The next day, things were back to normal. The 2016 Lansing Lee Conference will consider the question of whether civility and respect as spiritual values are essential to democracy. Led by New York Times writer, Mark Oppenheimer and a panel of thinkers and writers, participants will explore the idea of transformational leadership. As we look toward the elections of 2016, how can the country go from a place of partisanship to engagement?

Join us at Kanuga as we seek to engage public issues
at the intersection of politics and religion.

The annual Lansing Lee Conference honors the memory of Lansing B. Lee Jr. of Saint Paul's Church, Augusta, GA. Lee participated in many aspects of Kanuga's programs and governance for more than 50 years. The conference focuses on the theme "Practicing the Faith" and explores different dimensions of that topic in the context of the world, nation, the Church and society.
