St. John's Episcopal Church, Virginia, City, Montana (1860s).

As Bishop of Montana, with jurisdiction in Idaho and Utah (1867-1886), Bishop Tuttle had to spread his small financial reserves over a large territory. He was resourceful and purchased St. John's, Virginia, City, Montana, in a Sheriff's sale from a bankrupt Methodist church in the 1860s.

        Bishop's Summer Message

Bishop Hayashi offers blessings for our summer season. He also hopes that we are reflective of our Christian values as we face important political decisions during the next several months.

St. Stephen's Becomes a
Family Promise Host Site

On June 5, 2016, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 4615 South 3200 West, West Valley City, officially became a host site for Family Promise, Salt Lake City.  St. Stephen's now provides a safe alternative for homeless families, especially mothers and children.  After presiding at a packed
Sunday service, Bishop Hayashi blessed each room in the Sunday School wing, which is transformed into Family Promise bedrooms for four families during the week.  To view Good4Utah's coverage on the event, click here.

Partnerships with Granger Community Church, St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, San Esteban, and The Hepisipa Wesleyan  Church have been a great success. These interfaith connections are vital to the success of the program and St Stephen's will continue to build on these relationships as the years unfold. The Rev. Mary Janda observes that "the beauty of Family Promise is that it not only provides a safe shelter and good meals for the families being served, but it also brings people closer together as meals are prepared and classrooms are transformed into pleasant bedrooms for the week."

If you are interested in learning more about the program, please contact The Rev. Mary Janda at [email protected].

Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD)

Rhonda Park Uber
St. Paul's, Salt Lake City

On April 11-14, the Rev. Libby Hunter, Cathedral Church of St. Mark, Rhonda Park Uber, St. Paul's SLC, and Jill Trice, St. John's, Logan, attended the Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) disaster training in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  The training provided information about what to expect when disaster hits and how ERD can provide support and assistance.

One of the key takeaways was learning how a congregation, whether large or small, can provide support  and relief to a community during a crisis. The Utah team presented some of the information at the 2016 Diocesan Convention in April and plans to work with each congregation to help initiate disaster response plans.

For more information, please contact Rhonda Uber at: [email protected].

Utah Ministry Formation Program (UMFP)

ECCU blossems
Episcopal Church Center of Utah, home of UMFP.
The Diocese of Utah established the Utah Ministry Formation Program (UMFP) in 2007. The program provides local training to people from Utah and other Intermountain West dioceses who are preparing for ordination to the diaconate and priesthood in the Episcopal Church.  UMFP is designed for those choosing not to attend residential seminary, although some may wish to continue their work at a residential seminary.  The program is also open to lay persons who desire to strengthen their ministries or to use UMFP to assist them in discerning their ministry path.  Lay persons seeking to be licensed by the Bishop for specialized ministries such as preacher, eucharistic minister, catechist, etc., may also benefit                                                          from participating in the program.

The program operates on a two year cycle beginning each August, one weekend a month for ten months each year.  Classes meet at the Episcopal Church Center of Utah (ECCU) in downtown Salt Lake City from Friday evening through Sunday morning.

For additional information about UMFP or to request an application, contact Barbara Losse:  [email protected] or (801) 322-4131 x366.
