Solving America's Skills Gap

Last week we held our second JVS Economic Opportunity Forum - "Solving America's Skills Gap" - which was co-hosted by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. This forum was  a great gathering of business, government, higher education, philanthropy and workforce development leaders. Our speakers - Mohamad Ali ( Carbonite ) and Joe Fuller ( Harvard Business School ) - raised the alarm bell on the skills gap, which was matched by the energy in the room to address this issue. You can follow the conversation on Twitter via  #JVSForum .

JVS is committed to raising awareness on this key issue and being a part of the conversation to find solutions. Stay tuned for upcoming resources and events.
Over 60 Adult Students Prepared to Succeed in College

This month, we celebrated over 60 graduates from our Bridges to College ProgramRep. Aaron Michlewitz opened the ceremony, congratulating these graduates and affirming the work Bridges is doing both for adult education and the economy. The graduates will continue their studies at Bunker Hill Community College or Quincy College.

Check out the recent article published in Sampan News about the graduation ceremony.
Expanding Educational Pipeline and Credential Access

Good jobs have many access points and one credential that is critical is a high school diploma. To assist adults with gaining this fundamental credential and building their career paths, JVS launched the  Adult Diploma Program (ADP) in 2012. In partnership with Boston Public Schools (BPS) and DESE's Adult and Continuing Education Services, the ADP program confers a BPS diploma to participants upon completion of the program.

ADP functions much like a community college: students have their own schedules, taking as many courses a semester as their work schedule and family responsibilities will allow. There are 3 semesters per year, and the next semester begins in September.

FACES OF JVS: Merit Shalom
Merit has been the Science Instructor for our Adult Diploma Program since January 2015. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in Psychology and Education, and later went back to school to take more science courses because that is her favorite subject to teach! Since then she has taught students of all ages in an exciting variety of settings. Some of those settings included Canyonlands National Park (where she was an educator with the Park Service) and a historic buy-boat on the Chesapeake Bay (during her year with Echo Hill Outdoor School).
