The Last River Draw sculpture is one step closer to completion
Sculpture The Last River Draw, a life-size bronze sculpture of a logger standing on a floating log drawing logs down the Boyne River, is another step closer to an installation this fall. Martha Sulfridge, local artist and sculptor, is finalizing the clay model, pictured here. The next step will be to produce molds that will go to a foundry for casting. The foundry process, along with the extensive engineering that is required to install a floating sculpture in the river, will take several more months. The efforts of many are involved in this very complex process. A crowdfunding campaign was successfully completed in February and March where the community exceeded its goal for the matching grant. "We had such an outpouring of support ," said Lori Meeder, executive director of the Boyne City Main Street Program. "The larger donors have been presented with a beautiful artist's rendering of the logger. We had 13 prints framed, signed and dated by Martha. It is a classic work of art that we hope the donors enjoy for years to come." Through online donations and the many fundraising efforts, more than 500 people donated to the  initiative. The Last River Draw will be the community's first permanent piece to complement the Walkabout Sculpture Tour, an exhibit that features varying pieces each year from artists around the state. Today, Friday, nine new pieces are being installed around downtown and the parks. More information on this and other Main Street projects: [email protected] or 231.582.9009.  Full story.

Chamber donates $1,000; Crowdfunding continues for Avalanche trails
The Boyne Area Chamber board of directors voted to donate $1,000 to the Avalanche Preserve Trail Project's crowdfunding campaign this week. "This project will be a major boost to tourism and economic development," said Chamber Executive Director Jim Baumann. "Our board is very glad to support this effort and we hope our members and our local residents choose to lend their support as well."
The Top Of Michigan Mountain Bike Association is spearheading the development of 10 miles of trails at Boyne City's Avalanche Preserve. The group hopes to raise $100,000 for the effort through a new online fundraising effort. The campaign is through Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity. If the campaign reaches its crowdfunding goal of $50,000 by July 23, the project will win a matching grant with funds made possible by the two statewide agencies.
With the completion of the challenge issued by local builder Todd Wright, Charlevoix State Bank is looking to keep the momentum going with the efforts to raise money for the TOMMBA Avalanche Destination Trails campaign. The bank is challenging 10 Boyne City businesses to join them in donating $2,500 each to the project.
The Avalanche Project topped $22,000 this week toward the $50,000 goal. This project will bring amazing economic benefit to the area. Motels, restaurants, campgrounds, grocery stores, bike shops, gift shops, art studios, real estate agents/agencies, small businesses - in terms of exposure and workforce availability, will all benefit. These will be world class trails that people will drive many hours to experience, regardless of how they experience them - hiking, biking, snowshoeing, skiing. It will expose this area to young professionals, who will then want to find a way to make it their home. We will have this to enjoy, right in our back yard. It will help support the thriving community we are building.

HONESTY -  Whether honesty really is the best policy will be examined at Lifetree Café on Sunday, June 19, at 6:30 p.M.  The program, titled "Tell Me the Real Story: The Amazing Power of Honesty," features conversations surrounding whether telling the truth is best in all circumstances.  "There are times it's obvious you should tell the truth," said Lifetree Café national director, Craig Cable. "But in other situations, there seems to be some gray area. In this Lifetree program, participants will discuss when confessing the truth is best, and when it might not be-especially in relationships."  During the program, Lifetree participants will be given the opportunity to share experiences of when honesty, or a lack of it, has impacted their lives.  Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Lifetree Café is located 401 S Park St., Boyne City. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting.
