Greetings and Happy Summer!
I hope each of you are well on your way to a relaxing and wonderful summer! There has been a LOT of planning going on for our Fall Conference....we are so excited at all we have in store! Please mark your calendars for November 18-20 in Greenville. We will be staying at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

This year's theme is CREATE AND COLLABORATE. If you have a great lesson that you would like to share with your fellow art teachers, please consider presenting at the conference. A reminder that we are accepting nominations for awards until August 10th. I know we all know an outstanding art teacher in our membership! Nominate them and give them the recognition they deserve! Nomination information can be found at:
The
2016 Application for student scholarships is also available. There are 2 scholarships: $500 will be awarded to the institution of a student majoring in Studio Art or Art Education at any point in the baccalaureate program of studies before student teaching. $1,000 Liz Smith-Cox Art Education Major Scholarship will be awarded to the institution of a college or university graduate or undergraduate student that is an Art Education Major at the student teaching or Graduate School Level. A big hats off and thank you to Olivia Thornton who hosted an outstanding NAHS conference at the Columbia Museum of Art in April. We had an incredible turn out and lots of wonderful sessions! As well, Jen Pierce led a group of arts educators for the Eastern Region Mini Conference on a 6 Hour Kayaking Sandy Island Tour -- wildlife included!
If you have not had the chance to look at the incredible artwork that was showcased in our State Youth Art Month exhibit, take a look! What outstanding student artists and arts teachers we have! Impressive!

Information from Past President Meg Skow
SCAEA continues to develop valuable member benefits. We introduced the R. Scot Hockman Teacher Grant program during the 2015 - 1016 school year. We have a new opportunity for our members. We have created a partnership with artist and philanthropist, Mary Whyte. The Mary Whyte Art Educator Award will now be administered through SCAEA! Both of these awards provide funds to SCAEA members. Watch for a call for applications for these exciting opportunities for our SCAEA members.

Higher Education is continuing a discussion regarding
online course possibilities for visual art educators in South Carolina. Options under discussion include, Student Learning Outcomes and Read to Succeed for Visual Art Education. Lower Region Information from Elise Stuck
The Lower Region Youth Art Month exhibition presented over 50 exemplary works of art by K-12th grade artists. Th
e show was hosted at Fabulon: A Center for Art and Education in West Ashley. The closing reception on March 19th was marked with hands-on art activities, refreshments, and an award ceremony. Thanks to Susan Irish for donating her gallery space to SCAEA. Thanks to all the students, families, and teachers who attended the show and helped make YAM a success.

Lower Region YAM Show
Opportunities, Scholarships, Awards, Contests, You Name It, It's Right Here...
South Carolina Faces and Places Photography Exhibit at CMA:
Calling all students in South Carolina schools grades
1-12.
The Columbia Museum of Art is curating a student photography exhibition entitled South Carolina Faces and Places to capture the beauty of South Carolina with images of its people and places. The exhibition will be on view in the Columbia Museum of Art Wells Fargo Education Gallery from Thursday, September 1, 2016, through Friday, September 30, 2016. In October 2016, the exhibition travels to Washington, DC, where it will be installed in Senator Lindsay Graham's Capitol Hill offices for the sixth consecutive year. The exhibition will be on view for approximately one year and will be seen by over 7,000 people.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, July 8, 2016.

- Each qualified participant may submit 2 photographs
- Photographs must be in digital form, with a resolution of 1024 x 768 (or higher)
- The photograph's file name must include last name, first initial
- Photographs submitted on disc may be in .jpg, tif. or .psd format
- Each entry must include a completed entry form http://bit.ly/28Zj8Nh
Judges base their decision on the following qualities: originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, storytelling, and artistic merit. A panel of art educators, photographers, and museum staff will select the works for the exhibition.
Students will be notified by August 1, 2016, if their work has been selected for the exhibition.

Online entry system opens July 1 and lasts until September 1 without a fee for adult fine art and student art. See links below for more information.
