FORGETTING VIETNAM

The newest title from influential feminist theorist and filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha (SURNAME VIET GIVEN NAME NAM),   FORGETTING VIETNAM  is a  lyrical film essay commemorating the 40th anniversary of the end of the war. T he film draws inspiration from an ancient myth that Vietnam was created by a fight between two dragons whose interwined bodies fell into the South China Sea and formed the country's curving S-shaped coastline. This legend informs every aspect of Vietnamese culture. In FORGETTING VIETNAM , images of contemporary life unfold as a dialogue between land and water - two spaces that form the term "country." F ragments of text and song evoke traces of trauma of international proportions. The third space is one of historical and cultural re-memory in which insight from local inhabitants, immigrants, and veterans from an extremely divisive war remember yesterday's stories, and comment on today's events.
