Pentecost no bkgrnd

June 24, 2016 Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Sixth Sunday after Pentecost.

Rev. Ellen will celebrate and preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

The Sundays after Pentecost

As on most Sundays during "Ordinary Time," the longest season of the church year, vestments and altar cloth are green, the color of growth and life.

From Rev. Ellen

Dear Friends,

Next Wednesd ay Per, Anna, and I take off for our annual Sweden trip to visit family and friends.  Per's mom lives on an island on the east coast of Sweden called Oland (pictured, it is the island in yellow).  We will be there for about two weeks.  While I'm away The Rev. Clint Moore III and The Rev. Sam Portaro will be serving Emmanuel as supply priests.  I think you will enjoy them both.  If you have any pastoral needs while I'm away, please contact the office or our Family and Youth Minister, David Jackson (810) 357-1019.

I also need to share with you how full my heart is as we are
nearing the end of Operation Chill Campaign.   We are very close to meeting our goal, and for that I give thanks. What has been remarkable to me is the outpouring of generosity and love for Emmanuel.  Hearing from people who have long since moved away, or grew up here is a testament of how the Spirit moves and speaks here.  The mission and ministry of Emmanuel stays with people.  God has blessed us with so much: an inspiring church, beautiful grounds, ministries which require the best of us, and of course the fellowship with one another.  I'm grateful to be your priest and pastor.

My phone will remain behind here in the states.  The island has terrible Internet access, but I will try to check my email a few times while I'm away.  If something arises, feel free to email me, because I can at least be in prayer while I'm away. Have a safe and happy summer!

Many Blessings,
Ellen+

Thank you to all who have supported this effort with time, talent and treasure!

Please consider making your pledge payments by means of an automatic draft from your bank account.  Cash flow is always difficult, especially in the summer months, and an automatic deduction ensures that your pledge is made even when you are unable to be in church.

Thank you very much for considering this.

Saint of the Week: Saint Alban the Martyr

Feast Day: June 22

There were probably Christians in the British Isles already in the first century. However, Alban is the first recorded Christian to be martyred in Great Britain. The traditional date of his death is 304, when Christians throughout the Roman Empire were being persecuted by the Emperor Diocletian; but many scholars now date it as around 209, during the persecution under the Emperor Septimius Severus.

Alban was a pagan, and a soldier in the Roman Army. He gave shelter to a Christian priest who was fleeing from arrest, and in the next few days the two talked at length, and Alban became a Christian. When officers came in search of the priest, Alban met them, dressed in the priest's cloak, and they mistook him for the priest and arrested him. He refused to renounce his new faith, and was beheaded. He thus became the first Christian martyr in Britain. The second was the executioner who was ordered to kill him, but who heard his testimony and was so impressed that he became a Christian on the spot, and refused to kill Alban. The third was the priest, who when he learned that Alban had been arrested in his place, hurried to the court in the hope of saving Alban by turning himself in. The place of their deaths is near the site of St. Alban's Cathedral (not far from London) today.

WISH LIST

A 32-42 Inch flat screen Television

Having a television is essential for the way I teach.  I use technology, and PowerPoint, video clips and YouTube to teach.  I have found this use of technology to be effective for really all ages.

If you are thinking of replacing your 32-42 inch (or larger) flat screen, consider donating it to Emmanuel.

Thanks, Ellen+

Emmanuel's Garage Sale

Start holding items for this year's Emmanuel Garage Sale Garage Sale!  We will be having our garage sale on August 19 & 20.

Parishioners are asked to start saving items and bringing them to the church starting in July, due to space being used for classes before that time. If you need to bring anything before July, you can put it in the nursery.

If you need someone to pick up any items, please contact the church office or Penny Longo at (708) 275-5028.  We need everyone's help to make this year's garage sale a big success!
