The St. Petersburg College Foundation is pleased to present New York Times columnist and award-winning author David Brooks at our Second Annual Distinguished Speaker event on September 21 at the Palladium Theater.

Given the broad range of issues during this presidential campaign, Mr. Brooks' timely and informed analysis of present-day politics along with his commentary on the spirit of the times and how we define character in 2016 is certain to generate a great deal of interest and ensure an unforgettable evening for our audience. All proceeds from the event will help underwrite scholarships for SPC students.

We hope you will join us for an evening with one of the nation's leading writers and commentators. Ticket information will be available soon at:  www.spcollege.edu/foundation

Sincerely,
Frances Neu

SPC Leads in Alumni Earning Power

At the 2016 Degrees to Jobs Summit in May, Florida Governor Rick Scott awarded St. Petersburg College the Governor's Higher Education Leadership Award. The award recognized the college's investment in Florida's future by producing graduates with the highest entry-level wages among Florida's state colleges.

In 2015, SPC college graduates on average earned 147% more than local entry level wage earners. This percentage difference was the highest among all 28 State Colleges.

"Higher wages mean increased economic opportunities for our students and their families," said SPC President Bill Law. "It's why we monitor industry gaps in real time and adjust our academic programs and industry-recognized certifications to align with ever-evolving workforce demands. This is a nice honor for St. Petersburg College, but more importantly, it's about the success of our students, the strong partnerships we share with the public and private sectors."
Innovation  Grant Teaches Students Soft Skills
Students practice soft skills at
Graduate Leadership Academy

Student Life  and Leadership Coordinators Mary Gerst and Stephanie Henningsen are working to ensure that SPC students are learning social and soft skills. After attending a leadership training, Gerst and Henningsen were inspired to create the Graduate Leadership Academy and received a $3,500 Innovation Grant from the St. Petersburg College Foundation to launch the project.

"One of the main points that employers make is that while people may have an education, they often lack in soft skills," Gerst said. "It's so important to learn customer service and how to act in a workplace setting."

Gerst and Henningsen lead training sessions which include Meyers-Brigg personality tests, etiquette lessons, mock interviews and "mocktail" parties where students learn the art of networking.

This dynamic duo also hosts etiquette dinners with new Student Government Association officers and Lunch and Learn sessions to teach leadership and personal success skills.

SPC's Eileen LaHaie Receives Moxie Award

SPC Center for Public Safety Innovation Executive Director Eileen LaHaie and St. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway
SPC Executive Director for the Center for Public Safety Innovation recalls that as a little girl, her father always told her, "You have moxie!" She now has an award to prove it, as Drug Free America Foundation presented her with the Moxie Award at their event in May.

After working with the DFAF for more than twelve years, LaHaie said most of her work at SPC has been related to drug prevention. "We do community outreach, counter-drug training programs, make videos and develop curriculum for them," she said.

LaHaie said she grew up in a law enforcement family, and she's seen how destructive drugs can be - especially to families. "Now that I'm a grandmother, fighting drug addiction is no longer work - it has become a mission."
