MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

August 1, 2015

From the President...

School may be starting back next week, but Summer fun isn't over yet! Last night was the latest installment of the Food Truck events that we have been fortunate enough to have in our area thanks to the South Cobb Arts Alliance. If you have not been, you are missing out..

As you will see in the newsletter articles below, free concerts and movies, Food Truck Thursdays, and MIC's Farmers Market are still going strong. Don't miss the  Atlanta Pops Orchestra and Remember When Rock Was Young  on Saturday August 1st at 8:00PM at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre. It's hot outside, but you'll enjoy the time you spend at the Mable House complex, seeing friends and enjoying our community.

On a more serious note, MIC is co-sponsoring a Neighborhood Watch orientation meeting for the Lane Drive area, the details of which are shown below. MIC has already worked to assist the residents of one area of Mableton already and this will be one of two that we are working on, at present. Neighborhood Watch is sponsored by the Cobb County Police Department and is a time-tested approach designed to get neighbors to work together to reduce crime.  I know many of us have concerns about crime in Mableton. For sure, if you live in this neighborhood, or its immediate vicinity, please make plans to attend! If you live anywhere in Mableton and you are interested in a Neighborhood Watch program for your neighborhood, please come and see what it's all about. MIC is ready, willing and able to help you get started.

I hope to see you all soon. In the meanwhile, please do not hesitate to reach out to me for questions or comments. I am always ready to talk about Mableton!

Sincerely,

Joel Cope

Neighborhood Watch Meeting - Lane Drive & Garner Road
Monday, August 10th at 7pm

Along with Cobb County Police, MIC will host an information meeting aimed at starting a Neighborhood Watch Program in the Lane Drive, Garner Drive and Greer Park subdivision area on Monday night, August 10th at 7pm. The goal of Neighborhood Watch is to educate the community about crime, criminal patterns, and what to do if you are a victim of or a witness to a crime. The neighborhood is then organized and trained in "watch" procedures. This meeting will last approximately 1 hour and will begin a continuing liaison with the Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit. At least 50% of the homes in the area must participate in order to establish the Watch Program.

The meeting will be held at Bethel Church at 324 Lane Drive, Mableton. Everyone is welcome! While the purpose of this meeting focuses on Lane Drive, Garner Road and Greer Park, folks from other areas can learn about the process and see if they are interested in getting a program started in their area.

Zoning News
Coming up in August...

An application has been filed by the owner of 5751 Powell Drive (Z-54) for rezoning from residential and planned shopping center zoning categories to CRC (commercial/retail center) for an existing automotive paint and body shop. The MIC Board voted to remain neutral on this application if improvements are made to the property.

The hearing for the application for a subdivision on Old Alabama Road (Z-86) has been postponed again to the August 2nd Planning Commission hearing.  A revised R-15 plan with an open space overlay has been presented that addresses MIC's concerns about the development.

On August 18th, the Board of Commissioners will consider an Other Business Agenda item filed by Nature's Supply Centre, located at 4419 Floyd Road. The business is requesting that it not be required to install the entire 50 foot landscape buffer adjacent to the neighborhood and the Silver Comet Trail. MIC is continuing to work with the applicant on the Landscape Plan for this property required under their rezoning last fall and expects that any issues can be resolved.

Coming up in September...

Art Frame, LLC, located at 516 Veterans Memorial Highway (near the intersection with Pebblebrook Road) (Z-59) would like to change the zoning of adjacent property from Neighborhood Retail Commercial to Light Industrial in order to expand.  The applicant's attorney met with the Cobblestone Creek subdivision and MIC Zoning Committee. MIC's Board voted to remain neutral if changes are made to the plan and stipulations that would reduce the impact of the expansion and the existing operations on Cobblestone Creek. The stipulations initially proposed are not sufficient to protect the neighborhood and conversations are continuing. The application has been postponed while the plans are being modified.

The Church of the Pentecost USA is requesting rezoning for property located at 5606 Mableton Parkway, the old First Union Bank building. MIC will contact the applicants to learn more about their plans.

Commissioner Lisa Cupid holds meetings each month and everyone is invited to attend. The next meeting will be Wednesday, August 5th at 6pm at the South Cobb Recreation Center, 875 Six Flags Dr, Austell. This meeting will cover only cases to be heard in August. September zoning applications will be discussed at the next meeting in Mableton at the South Cobb Community Center, 620 Lions Club Drive, Mableton on August 26th at 6pm.
