MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

July 1, 2015

From the President...

It is hard to believe that it is already almost July and the Summer is flying by! In the spirt of trying to help those in need and helping with school; the Mableton Improvement Coalition is going to be teaming up with the Austell Community Task Force and the Powder Springs Community Task Force to try and collect donations for the Sweetwater Mission, a wonderful non-profit that operates in our area. On July 11th from 10 AM to 2 PM, volunteers from the Mableton Improvement Coalition, the Austell Community Task Force and the Powder Springs Community Task Force are going to be collecting items from the public and readers like you.   The flyer below lists the items below that are needed.

You may be wondering what you can do to help!   We are asking for assistance in two ways - one is to go out and shop and buy these items and bring them by on July 11 th and bring the items at Sweetwater Mission. The other way is for you to come and help volunteer to collect items yourself. Either way, you are doing great things for your community.

Also, some of you have expressed interest in starting Neighborhood Watch Programs in your area. MIC has already worked with the Cobb County PD to start one in Historic Mableton and we are working to start a second one. So, if you live in Mableton and would like for MIC to work with you to start one in your particular area of Mableton, please let us know

Finally many of you have been posting on our Facebook page to offer some very positive and constructive comments on events and activities in our community - and we love that. In that same vein, please do not hesitate to reach out to me for questions or comments. I am always ready to talk about Mableton!

I hope to see you on July 11th!

Sincerely,

Joel Cope

Let's Clean Up Mableton!
Saturday, July 25th at 9am

MIC's next Adopt-a-Mile will be Saturday, July 25th at 9:00am. We will meet in the Kroger Shopping Center parking lot area adjacent to the Autobell Car Wash on Floyd Road. Autobell will host this event and will provide refreshments for those who "finish the course".

With the first phase of the Floyd Road improvement project complete, we have returned to the segment between the Post Office and the old Rite Aid store where Floyd and Hicks Roads intersect.  With the added traffic islands, it's a bigger job than before, so your help will be greatly appreciated.

It takes only about an hour for MIC volunteers to pick up the accumulated trash and it's an hour well spent! Floyd Road will look a whole lot better when we are done. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring gloves if you like. We provide latex gloves, safety vests, trash bags, bottled water -- and a warm welcome.

Please contact Dave McDaniel if you plan to participate or if you have any questions/concerns.

Zoning News
Decided in June...

The Board of Commissioners approved the application for a Hardee's restaurant on the zoning sign small corner of Floyd Road and White Blvd. (Z-52).

After being postponed in May, the Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance application for an ATM installation in the shopping center at 6200 Mableton Parkway (V-40) at the corner of Mableton Parkway and Factory Shoals Road. As part of the approval, the property owner agreed to make improvements to the shopping center.

Coming up in July...

An application has been filed by the owner of 5751 Powell Drive (Z-54) for rezoning from residential and planned shopping center zoning categories to CRC (commercial/retail center) for an existing automotive paint and body shop. The MIC Board voted to remain neutral on this application if improvements are made to the property.

Art Frame, LLC, located at 516 Veterans Memorial Highway (near the intersection with Pebblebrook Road) (Z-59) would like to change the zoning of adjacent property from Neighborhood Retail Commercial to Light Industrial in order to expand.  The applicant's attorney met with the Cobblestone Creek subdivision and MIC Zoning Committee. MIC's Board voted to remain neutral if changes are made to the plan and stipulations that would reduce the impact of the expansion and the existing operations on Cobblestone Creek. The stipulations initially proposed are not sufficient to protect the neighborhood and conversations are continuing.

Coming up in August...

At its June 10th hearing, the Board of Zoning Appeals again heard and then held an application from the owner of 414 Francis Drive (V-82) who is seeking permission to drive and park vehicles on an unhardened surface.  The MIC Board has voted to oppose this application because of the precedent it would set. MIC representatives have spoken with the property owner, who is planning to pave the driveway, making that aspect of the variance a moot point.

On August 18th, the Board of Commissioners will consider an Other Business Agenda item filed by Natures Supply, located at 4419 Floyd Road. The business is requesting that it not be required to install the 50 foot landscape buffer adjacent to the neighborhood and the Silver Comet Trail. MIC has not taken a position on this application yet, but it is concerned that the appearance of the business be improved and that it be screened from both Floyd Road and the Silver Comet Trail.
