MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

April 1, 2015

From the President...

MIC members kicked off the organization's 14th year of service to the community with our Annual Community Meeting on March 24th. During this meeting, we reviewed MIC's accomplishments in 2014, including zoning, Neighborhood Watch, the Community Garden, Mableton Day and so much more.  In fact, to cover it all we had to create a list of accomplishments .  Of course, we also talked about our plans for 2105.

In keeping with our nonprofit corporation status and bylaws, we also conducted elections to the Board of Directors.  Tia Minnis, Shoresh Seldon and Tony Womble were elected to the Board for their first terms, and Robin Meyer, Ellen Russ, J.R. White and I were re-elected.  We join Cherri Belew, Bob Carreker, Mike Delano and Ellen Russ in making up the 11-member Board that governs our grass roots organization. Click here to read more about us.

At the same time, I want to thank two of our long time MIC Board members Dennis Hayes and Janis Stevenson who have served the Mableton community faithfully and for a long time. In addition, I want to recognize two other Board members, Betty Ann Cook and Don Seaberry who are also leaving the Board and we appreciate their service us as well.  We thank them all for their role in our success.

For those of you who enjoy "hands on" service, there are a couple of opportunities coming up. On April 4th we will be having another Adopt A Mile, discussed below, and on April 17th and 18th, the Kiwanis will be seeking help building the new playground at the Boys & Girls Club of Mableton. We would love to see you!  Online signup for Friday or Saturday.

Thanks also to everyone who attended the Annual Meeting for your show of support and your participation.  MIC is what you make it!

Sincerely,

Joel Cope

P.S.  Thanks to our newest sponsor, Alston's Custom Services.  Owner Jason Alston has been instrumental in maintaining the water system in MIC's Historic Mableton Community Garden.  We appreciate Jason bringing his technical skills to work for other gardeners and for MIC!

Adopt A Mile on Floyd Road
Saturday, April 4th at 9am

Our next Adopt-a-Mile of 2015 will be Saturday, April 4th, starting promptly at

Thanks to our hardy January volunteers!

9:00am. We will meet at the Westside Bank at Floyd and Nickajack Roads. Please park in the area closest to Nickajack Road.

With the first phase of the Floyd Road improvement project complete, we have returned to the segment between the Post Office and the old Rite Aid store where Floyd and Hicks Roads intersect.  With the road widening and traffic islands, it's a bigger job than before, so your help will be greatly appreciated.  We had a great turnout in January and hope to be as fortunate this time.

It takes only about an hour for MIC volunteers to pick up the accumulated trash and it's an hour well spent! Floyd Road will look a whole lot better when we are done. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring gloves if you like. We provide latex gloves, safety vests, trash bags, bottled water -- and a warm welcome.

Zoning News
Decided in March...
zoning sign small

The Board of Commissioners voted to change the zoning of the property at 1884 Old Alabama Road (Z-5)  from General Commercial to Office and Institutional, reducing the intensity of this former auto repair shop. The approval also contains many stipulations requested by MIC aimed at protecting nearby homes.

An application to change the zoning from R-20 to OI ("Office Institutional") for 1092 Veterans Memorial Highway (Z-15) for a veterinary office was approved by the Board of Commissioners in March. MIC had advocated for language in the conservation easement for the floodplain that would clarify the County's ability to build the Nickajack Creek Trail.  However, the floodplain portion of the property was not rezoned, so no conservation easement was agreed upon. MIC will continue to work for the construction of this trail.

Coming up...

On May 13, the Board of Zoning Appeals will hear a variance application for an ATM installation in the shopping center at 6200 Mableton Parkway (V-40) at the corner of Mableton Parkway and Factory Shoals Road.  The MIC Board has voted to oppose this application for several reasons: public safety concerns, lack of space in the parking lot, and ongoing code violations, especially related to trash and debris behind the shopping center. This hearing was scheduled for April 1, but was postponed.

The hearing for the application for a subdivision on Old Alabama Road (Z-86) on property surrounding New Harvest Baptist Church has been postponed again to the April 7th Planning Commission hearing.  As this newsletter goes out, MIC is waiting to see a revised R-15 plan with an open space overlay. MIC is working with neighborhood groups to review the new plan. For more information on this rezoning, contact Sonya Wheatley, a member of MIC's Zoning Committee.  Please check with Sonya before making plans to attend the hearing, as it is possible that it will be continued again.
